  1. .. _ref-settings:
  2. Available settings
  3. ==================
  4. Here's a full list of all available settings, in alphabetical order, and their
  5. default values.
  6. .. setting:: ABSOLUTE_URL_OVERRIDES
  7. ABSOLUTE_URL_OVERRIDES
  8. ----------------------
  9. Default: ``{}`` (Empty dictionary)
  10. A dictionary mapping ``"app_label.model_name"`` strings to functions that take
  11. a model object and return its URL. This is a way of overriding
  12. ``get_absolute_url()`` methods on a per-installation basis. Example::
  13. ABSOLUTE_URL_OVERRIDES = {
  14. 'blogs.weblog': lambda o: "/blogs/%s/" % o.slug,
  15. 'news.story': lambda o: "/stories/%s/%s/" % (o.pub_year, o.slug),
  16. }
  17. Note that the model name used in this setting should be all lower-case, regardless
  18. of the case of the actual model class name.
  19. .. setting:: ADMIN_FOR
  20. ADMIN_FOR
  21. ---------
  22. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  23. Used for admin-site settings modules, this should be a tuple of settings
  24. modules (in the format ``'foo.bar.baz'``) for which this site is an admin.
  25. The admin site uses this in its automatically-introspected documentation of
  26. models, views and template tags.
  27. .. setting:: ADMIN_MEDIA_PREFIX
  28. ADMIN_MEDIA_PREFIX
  29. ------------------
  30. Default: ``'/media/'``
  31. The URL prefix for admin media -- CSS, JavaScript and images used by
  32. the Django administrative interface. Make sure to use a trailing
  33. slash, and to have this be different from the ``MEDIA_URL`` setting
  34. (since the same URL cannot be mapped onto two different sets of
  35. files).
  36. .. setting:: ADMINS
  37. ADMINS
  38. ------
  39. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  40. A tuple that lists people who get code error notifications. When
  41. ``DEBUG=False`` and a view raises an exception, Django will e-mail these people
  42. with the full exception information. Each member of the tuple should be a tuple
  43. of (Full name, e-mail address). Example::
  44. (('John', 'john@example.com'), ('Mary', 'mary@example.com'))
  45. Note that Django will e-mail *all* of these people whenever an error happens.
  46. See :ref:`howto-error-reporting` for more information.
  47. .. setting:: ALLOWED_INCLUDE_ROOTS
  48. ALLOWED_INCLUDE_ROOTS
  49. ---------------------
  50. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  51. A tuple of strings representing allowed prefixes for the ``{% ssi %}`` template
  52. tag. This is a security measure, so that template authors can't access files
  53. that they shouldn't be accessing.
  54. For example, if ``ALLOWED_INCLUDE_ROOTS`` is ``('/home/html', '/var/www')``,
  55. then ``{% ssi /home/html/foo.txt %}`` would work, but ``{% ssi /etc/passwd %}``
  56. wouldn't.
  57. .. setting:: APPEND_SLASH
  58. APPEND_SLASH
  59. ------------
  60. Default: ``True``
  61. Whether to append trailing slashes to URLs. This is only used if
  62. ``CommonMiddleware`` is installed (see :ref:`topics-http-middleware`). See also
  63. ``PREPEND_WWW``.
  64. .. setting:: AUTHENTICATION_BACKENDS
  65. AUTHENTICATION_BACKENDS
  66. -----------------------
  67. Default: ``('django.contrib.auth.backends.ModelBackend',)``
  68. A tuple of authentication backend classes (as strings) to use when attempting to
  69. authenticate a user. See the :ref:`authentication backends documentation
  70. <authentication-backends>` for details.
  71. .. setting:: AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE
  72. AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE
  73. -------------------
  74. Default: Not defined
  75. The site-specific user profile model used by this site. See
  76. :ref:`auth-profiles`.
  77. .. setting:: CACHE_BACKEND
  78. CACHE_BACKEND
  79. -------------
  80. Default: ``'locmem://'``
  81. The cache backend to use. See :ref:`topics-cache`.
  82. .. setting:: CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_KEY_PREFIX
  83. CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_KEY_PREFIX
  84. ---------------------------
  85. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  86. The cache key prefix that the cache middleware should use. See
  87. :ref:`topics-cache`.
  88. .. setting:: CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_SECONDS
  89. CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_SECONDS
  90. ------------------------
  91. Default: ``600``
  92. The default number of seconds to cache a page when the caching middleware or
  93. ``cache_page()`` decorator is used.
  94. .. setting:: DATABASE_ENGINE
  95. DATABASE_ENGINE
  96. ---------------
  97. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  98. The database backend to use. The built-in database backends are
  99. ``'postgresql_psycopg2'``, ``'postgresql'``, ``'mysql'``, ``'sqlite3'``, and
  100. ``'oracle'``.
  101. You can use a database backend that doesn't ship with Django by setting
  102. ``DATABASE_ENGINE`` to a fully-qualified path (i.e.
  103. ``mypackage.backends.whatever``). Writing a whole new database backend from
  104. scratch is left as an exercise to the reader; see the other backends for
  105. examples.
  106. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  107. Support for external database backends is new in 1.0.
  108. .. setting:: DATABASE_HOST
  109. DATABASE_HOST
  110. -------------
  111. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  112. Which host to use when connecting to the database. An empty string means
  113. localhost. Not used with SQLite.
  114. If this value starts with a forward slash (``'/'``) and you're using MySQL,
  115. MySQL will connect via a Unix socket to the specified socket. For example::
  116. DATABASE_HOST = '/var/run/mysql'
  117. If you're using MySQL and this value *doesn't* start with a forward slash, then
  118. this value is assumed to be the host.
  119. If you're using PostgreSQL, an empty string means to use a Unix domain socket
  120. for the connection, rather than a network connection to localhost. If you
  121. explicitly need to use a TCP/IP connection on the local machine with
  122. PostgreSQL, specify ``localhost`` here.
  123. .. setting:: DATABASE_NAME
  124. DATABASE_NAME
  125. -------------
  126. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  127. The name of the database to use. For SQLite, it's the full path to the database
  128. file. When specifying the path, always use forward slashes, even on Windows
  129. (e.g. ``C:/homes/user/mysite/sqlite3.db``).
  130. .. setting:: DATABASE_OPTIONS
  131. DATABASE_OPTIONS
  132. ----------------
  133. Default: ``{}`` (Empty dictionary)
  134. Extra parameters to use when connecting to the database. Consult backend
  135. module's document for available keywords.
  136. .. setting:: DATABASE_PASSWORD
  137. DATABASE_PASSWORD
  138. -----------------
  139. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  140. The password to use when connecting to the database. Not used with SQLite.
  141. .. setting:: DATABASE_PORT
  142. DATABASE_PORT
  143. -------------
  144. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  145. The port to use when connecting to the database. An empty string means the
  146. default port. Not used with SQLite.
  147. .. setting:: DATABASE_USER
  148. DATABASE_USER
  149. -------------
  150. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  151. The username to use when connecting to the database. Not used with SQLite.
  152. .. setting:: DATE_FORMAT
  153. DATE_FORMAT
  154. -----------
  155. Default: ``'N j, Y'`` (e.g. ``Feb. 4, 2003``)
  156. The default formatting to use for date fields on Django admin change-list
  157. pages -- and, possibly, by other parts of the system. See
  158. :ttag:`allowed date format strings <now>`.
  159. See also ``DATETIME_FORMAT``, ``TIME_FORMAT``, ``YEAR_MONTH_FORMAT``
  160. and ``MONTH_DAY_FORMAT``.
  161. .. setting:: DATETIME_FORMAT
  162. DATETIME_FORMAT
  163. ---------------
  164. Default: ``'N j, Y, P'`` (e.g. ``Feb. 4, 2003, 4 p.m.``)
  165. The default formatting to use for datetime fields on Django admin change-list
  166. pages -- and, possibly, by other parts of the system. See
  167. :ttag:`allowed date format strings <now>`.
  168. See also ``DATE_FORMAT``, ``DATETIME_FORMAT``, ``TIME_FORMAT``,
  169. ``YEAR_MONTH_FORMAT`` and ``MONTH_DAY_FORMAT``.
  170. .. setting:: DEBUG
  171. DEBUG
  172. -----
  173. Default: ``False``
  174. A boolean that turns on/off debug mode.
  175. If you define custom settings, `django/views/debug.py`_ has a ``HIDDEN_SETTINGS``
  176. regular expression which will hide from the DEBUG view anything that contains
  177. ``'SECRET'``, ``'PASSWORD'``, or ``'PROFANITIES'``. This allows untrusted users to
  178. be able to give backtraces without seeing sensitive (or offensive) settings.
  179. Still, note that there are always going to be sections of your debug output that
  180. are inappropriate for public consumption. File paths, configuration options, and
  181. the like all give attackers extra information about your server.
  182. It is also important to remember that when running with ``DEBUG`` turned on, Django
  183. will remember every SQL query it executes. This is useful when you are debugging,
  184. but on a production server, it will rapidly consume memory.
  185. Never deploy a site into production with ``DEBUG`` turned on.
  186. .. _django/views/debug.py: http://code.djangoproject.com/browser/django/trunk/django/views/debug.py
  187. DEBUG_PROPAGATE_EXCEPTIONS
  188. --------------------------
  189. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  190. Default: ``False``
  191. If set to True, Django's normal exception handling of view functions
  192. will be suppressed, and exceptions will propagate upwards. This can
  193. be useful for some test setups, and should never be used on a live
  194. site.
  195. .. setting:: DEFAULT_CHARSET
  196. DEFAULT_CHARSET
  197. ---------------
  198. Default: ``'utf-8'``
  199. Default charset to use for all ``HttpResponse`` objects, if a MIME type isn't
  200. manually specified. Used with ``DEFAULT_CONTENT_TYPE`` to construct the
  201. ``Content-Type`` header.
  202. .. setting:: DEFAULT_CONTENT_TYPE
  203. DEFAULT_CONTENT_TYPE
  204. --------------------
  205. Default: ``'text/html'``
  206. Default content type to use for all ``HttpResponse`` objects, if a MIME type
  207. isn't manually specified. Used with ``DEFAULT_CHARSET`` to construct the
  208. ``Content-Type`` header.
  209. .. setting:: DEFAULT_FROM_EMAIL
  210. DEFAULT_FILE_STORAGE
  211. --------------------
  212. Default: ``django.core.files.storage.FileSystemStorage``
  213. Default file storage class to be used for any file-related operations that don't
  214. specify a particular storage system. See :ref:`topics-files`.
  215. DEFAULT_FROM_EMAIL
  216. ------------------
  217. Default: ``'webmaster@localhost'``
  218. Default e-mail address to use for various automated correspondence from the
  219. site manager(s).
  220. .. setting:: DEFAULT_TABLESPACE
  221. DEFAULT_TABLESPACE
  222. ------------------
  223. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  224. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  225. Default tablespace to use for models that don't specify one, if the
  226. backend supports it.
  227. .. setting:: DEFAULT_INDEX_TABLESPACE
  228. DEFAULT_INDEX_TABLESPACE
  229. ------------------------
  230. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  231. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  232. Default tablespace to use for indexes on fields that don't specify
  233. one, if the backend supports it.
  234. .. setting:: DISALLOWED_USER_AGENTS
  235. DISALLOWED_USER_AGENTS
  236. ----------------------
  237. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  238. List of compiled regular expression objects representing User-Agent strings that
  239. are not allowed to visit any page, systemwide. Use this for bad robots/crawlers.
  240. This is only used if ``CommonMiddleware`` is installed (see
  241. :ref:`topics-http-middleware`).
  242. .. setting:: EMAIL_HOST
  243. EMAIL_HOST
  244. ----------
  245. Default: ``'localhost'``
  246. The host to use for sending e-mail.
  247. See also ``EMAIL_PORT``.
  248. .. setting:: EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD
  249. EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD
  250. -------------------
  251. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  252. Password to use for the SMTP server defined in ``EMAIL_HOST``. This setting is
  253. used in conjunction with ``EMAIL_HOST_USER`` when authenticating to the SMTP
  254. server. If either of these settings is empty, Django won't attempt
  255. authentication.
  256. See also ``EMAIL_HOST_USER``.
  257. .. setting:: EMAIL_HOST_USER
  258. EMAIL_HOST_USER
  259. ---------------
  260. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  261. Username to use for the SMTP server defined in ``EMAIL_HOST``. If empty,
  262. Django won't attempt authentication.
  263. See also ``EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD``.
  264. .. setting:: EMAIL_PORT
  265. EMAIL_PORT
  266. ----------
  267. Default: ``25``
  268. Port to use for the SMTP server defined in ``EMAIL_HOST``.
  269. .. setting:: EMAIL_SUBJECT_PREFIX
  270. EMAIL_SUBJECT_PREFIX
  271. --------------------
  272. Default: ``'[Django] '``
  273. Subject-line prefix for e-mail messages sent with ``django.core.mail.mail_admins``
  274. or ``django.core.mail.mail_managers``. You'll probably want to include the
  275. trailing space.
  276. .. setting:: EMAIL_USE_TLS
  277. EMAIL_USE_TLS
  278. -------------
  279. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  280. Default: ``False``
  281. Whether to use a TLS (secure) connection when talking to the SMTP server.
  282. .. setting:: FILE_CHARSET
  283. FILE_CHARSET
  284. ------------
  285. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  286. Default: ``'utf-8'``
  287. The character encoding used to decode any files read from disk. This includes
  288. template files and initial SQL data files.
  289. .. setting:: FILE_UPLOAD_HANDLERS
  290. FILE_UPLOAD_HANDLERS
  291. --------------------
  292. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  293. Default::
  294. ("django.core.files.uploadhandler.MemoryFileUploadHandler",
  295. "django.core.files.uploadhandler.TemporaryFileUploadHandler",)
  296. A tuple of handlers to use for uploading. See :ref:`topics-files` for details.
  297. .. setting:: FILE_UPLOAD_MAX_MEMORY_SIZE
  298. FILE_UPLOAD_MAX_MEMORY_SIZE
  299. ---------------------------
  300. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  301. Default: ``2621440`` (i.e. 2.5 MB).
  302. The maximum size (in bytes) that an upload will be before it gets streamed to
  303. the file system. See :ref:`topics-files` for details.
  304. .. setting:: FILE_UPLOAD_TEMP_DIR
  305. FILE_UPLOAD_TEMP_DIR
  306. --------------------
  307. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  308. Default: ``None``
  309. The directory to store data temporarily while uploading files. If ``None``,
  310. Django will use the standard temporary directory for the operating system. For
  311. example, this will default to '/tmp' on \*nix-style operating systems.
  312. See :ref:`topics-files` for details.
  313. .. setting:: FILE_UPLOAD_PERMISSIONS
  314. FILE_UPLOAD_PERMISSIONS
  315. -----------------------
  316. Default: ``None``
  317. The numeric mode (i.e. ``0644``) to set newly uploaded files to. For
  318. more information about what these modes mean, see the `documentation for
  319. os.chmod`_
  320. If this isn't given or is ``None``, you'll get operating-system
  321. dependent behavior. On most platforms, temporary files will have a mode
  322. of ``0600``, and files saved from memory will be saved using the
  323. system's standard umask.
  324. .. warning::
  325. **Always prefix the mode with a 0.**
  326. If you're not familiar with file modes, please note that the leading
  327. ``0`` is very important: it indicates an octal number, which is the
  328. way that modes must be specified. If you try to use ``644``, you'll
  329. get totally incorrect behavior.
  330. .. _documentation for os.chmod: http://docs.python.org/lib/os-file-dir.html
  331. .. setting:: FIXTURE_DIRS
  332. FIXTURE_DIRS
  333. -------------
  334. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  335. List of locations of the fixture data files, in search order. Note that
  336. these paths should use Unix-style forward slashes, even on Windows. See
  337. :ref:`topics-testing`.
  338. FORCE_SCRIPT_NAME
  339. ------------------
  340. Default: ``None``
  341. If not ``None``, this will be used as the value of the ``SCRIPT_NAME``
  342. environment variable in any HTTP request. This setting can be used to override
  343. the server-provided value of ``SCRIPT_NAME``, which may be a rewritten version
  344. of the preferred value or not supplied at all.
  345. .. setting:: IGNORABLE_404_ENDS
  346. IGNORABLE_404_ENDS
  347. ------------------
  348. Default: ``('mail.pl', 'mailform.pl', 'mail.cgi', 'mailform.cgi', 'favicon.ico', '.php')``
  349. See also ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS`` and ``Error reporting via e-mail``.
  350. .. setting:: IGNORABLE_404_STARTS
  351. IGNORABLE_404_STARTS
  352. --------------------
  353. Default: ``('/cgi-bin/', '/_vti_bin', '/_vti_inf')``
  354. A tuple of strings that specify beginnings of URLs that should be ignored by
  355. the 404 e-mailer. See ``SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS``, ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` and
  356. the :ref:`howto-error-reporting`.
  357. .. setting:: INSTALLED_APPS
  358. INSTALLED_APPS
  359. --------------
  360. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  361. A tuple of strings designating all applications that are enabled in this Django
  362. installation. Each string should be a full Python path to a Python package that
  363. contains a Django application, as created by :djadmin:`django-admin.py startapp
  364. <startapp>`.
  365. .. setting:: INTERNAL_IPS
  366. INTERNAL_IPS
  367. ------------
  368. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  369. A tuple of IP addresses, as strings, that:
  370. * See debug comments, when ``DEBUG`` is ``True``
  371. * Receive X headers if the ``XViewMiddleware`` is installed (see
  372. :ref:`topics-http-middleware`)
  373. .. setting:: JING_PATH
  374. JING_PATH
  375. ---------
  376. Default: ``'/usr/bin/jing'``
  377. Path to the "Jing" executable. Jing is a RELAX NG validator, and Django uses it
  378. to validate each ``XMLField`` in your models.
  379. See http://www.thaiopensource.com/relaxng/jing.html .
  380. .. setting:: LANGUAGE_CODE
  381. LANGUAGE_CODE
  382. -------------
  383. Default: ``'en-us'``
  384. A string representing the language code for this installation. This should be in
  385. standard language format. For example, U.S. English is ``"en-us"``. See
  386. :ref:`topics-i18n`.
  387. .. setting:: LANGUAGE_COOKIE_NAME
  388. LANGUAGE_COOKIE_NAME
  389. --------------------
  390. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  391. Default: ``'django_language'``
  392. The name of the cookie to use for the language cookie. This can be whatever you
  393. want (but should be different from ``SESSION_COOKIE_NAME``). See
  394. :ref:`topics-i18n`.
  395. .. setting:: LANGUAGES
  396. LANGUAGES
  397. ---------
  398. Default: A tuple of all available languages. This list is continually growing
  399. and including a copy here would inevitably become rapidly out of date. You can
  400. see the current list of translated languages by looking in
  401. ``django/conf/global_settings.py`` (or view the `online source`_).
  402. .. _online source: http://code.djangoproject.com/browser/django/trunk/django/conf/global_settings.py
  403. The list is a tuple of two-tuples in the format (language code, language
  404. name) -- for example, ``('ja', 'Japanese')``. This specifies which languages
  405. are available for language selection. See :ref:`topics-i18n`.
  406. Generally, the default value should suffice. Only set this setting if you want
  407. to restrict language selection to a subset of the Django-provided languages.
  408. If you define a custom ``LANGUAGES`` setting, it's OK to mark the languages as
  409. translation strings (as in the default value displayed above) -- but use a
  410. "dummy" ``gettext()`` function, not the one in ``django.utils.translation``.
  411. You should *never* import ``django.utils.translation`` from within your
  412. settings file, because that module in itself depends on the settings, and that
  413. would cause a circular import.
  414. The solution is to use a "dummy" ``gettext()`` function. Here's a sample
  415. settings file::
  416. gettext = lambda s: s
  417. LANGUAGES = (
  418. ('de', gettext('German')),
  419. ('en', gettext('English')),
  420. )
  421. With this arrangement, ``django-admin.py makemessages`` will still find and
  422. mark these strings for translation, but the translation won't happen at
  423. runtime -- so you'll have to remember to wrap the languages in the *real*
  424. ``gettext()`` in any code that uses ``LANGUAGES`` at runtime.
  425. .. setting:: LOCALE_PATHS
  426. LOCALE_PATHS
  427. ------------
  428. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  429. A tuple of directories where Django looks for translation files.
  430. See :ref:`translations-in-your-own-projects`.
  431. .. setting:: LOGIN_REDIRECT_URL
  432. LOGIN_REDIRECT_URL
  433. ------------------
  434. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  435. Default: ``'/accounts/profile/'``
  436. The URL where requests are redirected after login when the
  437. ``contrib.auth.login`` view gets no ``next`` parameter.
  438. This is used by the :func:`~django.contrib.auth.decorators.login_required`
  439. decorator, for example.
  440. .. setting:: LOGIN_URL
  441. LOGIN_URL
  442. ---------
  443. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  444. Default: ``'/accounts/login/'``
  445. The URL where requests are redirected for login, specially when using the
  446. :func:`~django.contrib.auth.decorators.login_required` decorator.
  447. .. setting:: LOGOUT_URL
  448. LOGOUT_URL
  449. ----------
  450. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  451. Default: ``'/accounts/logout/'``
  452. LOGIN_URL counterpart.
  453. .. setting:: MANAGERS
  454. MANAGERS
  455. --------
  456. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  457. A tuple in the same format as ``ADMINS`` that specifies who should get
  458. broken-link notifications when ``SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS=True``.
  459. .. setting:: MEDIA_ROOT
  460. MEDIA_ROOT
  461. ----------
  462. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  463. Absolute path to the directory that holds media for this installation.
  464. Example: ``"/home/media/media.lawrence.com/"`` See also ``MEDIA_URL``.
  465. .. setting:: MEDIA_URL
  466. MEDIA_URL
  467. ---------
  468. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  469. URL that handles the media served from ``MEDIA_ROOT``.
  470. Example: ``"http://media.lawrence.com"``
  471. Note that this should have a trailing slash if it has a path component.
  472. Good: ``"http://www.example.com/static/"``
  473. Bad: ``"http://www.example.com/static"``
  474. .. setting:: MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES
  475. MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES
  476. ------------------
  477. Default::
  478. ("django.contrib.sessions.middleware.SessionMiddleware",
  479. "django.contrib.auth.middleware.AuthenticationMiddleware",
  480. "django.middleware.common.CommonMiddleware",
  481. "django.middleware.doc.XViewMiddleware")
  482. A tuple of middleware classes to use. See :ref:`topics-http-middleware`.
  483. .. setting:: MONTH_DAY_FORMAT
  484. MONTH_DAY_FORMAT
  485. ----------------
  486. Default: ``'F j'``
  487. The default formatting to use for date fields on Django admin change-list
  488. pages -- and, possibly, by other parts of the system -- in cases when only the
  489. month and day are displayed.
  490. For example, when a Django admin change-list page is being filtered by a date
  491. drilldown, the header for a given day displays the day and month. Different
  492. locales have different formats. For example, U.S. English would say
  493. "January 1," whereas Spanish might say "1 Enero."
  494. See :ttag:`allowed date format strings <now>`. See also ``DATE_FORMAT``,
  495. ``DATETIME_FORMAT``, ``TIME_FORMAT`` and ``YEAR_MONTH_FORMAT``.
  496. .. setting:: PREPEND_WWW
  497. PREPEND_WWW
  498. -----------
  499. Default: ``False``
  500. Whether to prepend the "www." subdomain to URLs that don't have it. This is only
  501. used if ``CommonMiddleware`` is installed (see :ref:`topics-http-middleware`).
  502. See also ``APPEND_SLASH``.
  503. .. setting:: PROFANITIES_LIST
  504. PROFANITIES_LIST
  505. ----------------
  506. A tuple of profanities, as strings, that will trigger a validation error when
  507. the ``hasNoProfanities`` validator is called.
  508. We don't list the default values here, because that would be profane. To see
  509. the default values, see the file `django/conf/global_settings.py`_.
  510. .. _django/conf/global_settings.py: http://code.djangoproject.com/browser/django/trunk/django/conf/global_settings.py
  511. .. setting:: ROOT_URLCONF
  512. ROOT_URLCONF
  513. ------------
  514. Default: Not defined
  515. A string representing the full Python import path to your root URLconf. For example:
  516. ``"mydjangoapps.urls"``. Can be overridden on a per-request basis by
  517. setting the attribute ``urlconf`` on the incoming ``HttpRequest``
  518. object. See :ref:`how-django-processes-a-request` for details.
  519. .. setting:: SECRET_KEY
  520. SECRET_KEY
  521. ----------
  522. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  523. A secret key for this particular Django installation. Used to provide a seed in
  524. secret-key hashing algorithms. Set this to a random string -- the longer, the
  525. better. ``django-admin.py startproject`` creates one automatically.
  526. .. setting:: SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS
  527. SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS
  528. -----------------------
  529. Default: ``False``
  530. Whether to send an e-mail to the ``MANAGERS`` each time somebody visits a
  531. Django-powered page that is 404ed with a non-empty referer (i.e., a broken
  532. link). This is only used if ``CommonMiddleware`` is installed (see
  533. :ref:`topics-http-middleware`. See also ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS``,
  534. ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` and :ref:`howto-error-reporting`.
  535. .. setting:: SERIALIZATION_MODULES
  536. SERIALIZATION_MODULES
  537. ---------------------
  538. Default: Not defined.
  539. A dictionary of modules containing serializer definitions (provided as
  540. strings), keyed by a string identifier for that serialization type. For
  541. example, to define a YAML serializer, use::
  542. SERIALIZATION_MODULES = { 'yaml' : 'path.to.yaml_serializer' }
  543. .. setting:: SERVER_EMAIL
  544. SERVER_EMAIL
  545. ------------
  546. Default: ``'root@localhost'``
  547. The e-mail address that error messages come from, such as those sent to
  548. ``ADMINS`` and ``MANAGERS``.
  549. .. setting:: SESSION_ENGINE
  550. SESSION_ENGINE
  551. --------------
  552. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  553. Default: ``django.contrib.sessions.backends.db``
  554. Controls where Django stores session data. Valid values are:
  555. * ``'django.contrib.sessions.backends.db'``
  556. * ``'django.contrib.sessions.backends.file'``
  557. * ``'django.contrib.sessions.backends.cache'``
  558. See :ref:`topics-http-sessions`.
  559. .. setting:: SESSION_COOKIE_AGE
  560. SESSION_COOKIE_AGE
  561. ------------------
  562. Default: ``1209600`` (2 weeks, in seconds)
  563. The age of session cookies, in seconds. See :ref:`topics-http-sessions`.
  564. .. setting:: SESSION_COOKIE_DOMAIN
  565. SESSION_COOKIE_DOMAIN
  566. ---------------------
  567. Default: ``None``
  568. The domain to use for session cookies. Set this to a string such as
  569. ``".lawrence.com"`` for cross-domain cookies, or use ``None`` for a standard
  570. domain cookie. See the :ref:`topics-http-sessions`.
  571. .. setting:: SESSION_COOKIE_NAME
  572. SESSION_COOKIE_NAME
  573. -------------------
  574. Default: ``'sessionid'``
  575. The name of the cookie to use for sessions. This can be whatever you want (but
  576. should be different from ``LANGUAGE_COOKIE_NAME``). See the :ref:`topics-http-sessions`.
  577. .. setting:: SESSION_COOKIE_PATH
  578. SESSION_COOKIE_PATH
  579. -------------------
  580. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  581. Default: ``'/'``
  582. The path set on the session cookie. This should either match the URL path of your
  583. Django installation or be parent of that path.
  584. This is useful if you have multiple Django instances running under the same
  585. hostname. They can use different cookie paths, and each instance will only see
  586. its own session cookie.
  587. .. setting:: SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE
  588. SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE
  589. ---------------------
  590. Default: ``False``
  591. Whether to use a secure cookie for the session cookie. If this is set to
  592. ``True``, the cookie will be marked as "secure," which means browsers may
  593. ensure that the cookie is only sent under an HTTPS connection.
  594. See the :ref:`topics-http-sessions`.
  595. .. setting:: SESSION_EXPIRE_AT_BROWSER_CLOSE
  596. SESSION_EXPIRE_AT_BROWSER_CLOSE
  597. -------------------------------
  598. Default: ``False``
  599. Whether to expire the session when the user closes his or her browser.
  600. See the :ref:`topics-http-sessions`.
  601. .. setting:: SESSION_FILE_PATH
  602. SESSION_FILE_PATH
  603. -----------------
  604. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  605. Default: ``None``
  606. If you're using file-based session storage, this sets the directory in
  607. which Django will store session data. See :ref:`topics-http-sessions`. When
  608. the default value (``None``) is used, Django will use the standard temporary
  609. directory for the system.
  610. .. setting:: SESSION_SAVE_EVERY_REQUEST
  611. SESSION_SAVE_EVERY_REQUEST
  612. --------------------------
  613. Default: ``False``
  614. Whether to save the session data on every request. See
  615. :ref:`topics-http-sessions`.
  616. .. setting:: SITE_ID
  617. SITE_ID
  618. -------
  619. Default: Not defined
  620. The ID, as an integer, of the current site in the ``django_site`` database
  621. table. This is used so that application data can hook into specific site(s)
  622. and a single database can manage content for multiple sites.
  623. See :ref:`ref-contrib-sites`.
  624. .. _site framework docs: ../sites/
  625. .. setting:: TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS
  626. TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS
  627. ---------------------------
  628. Default::
  629. ("django.core.context_processors.auth",
  630. "django.core.context_processors.debug",
  631. "django.core.context_processors.i18n",
  632. "django.core.context_processors.media")
  633. A tuple of callables that are used to populate the context in ``RequestContext``.
  634. These callables take a request object as their argument and return a dictionary
  635. of items to be merged into the context.
  636. .. setting:: TEMPLATE_DEBUG
  637. TEMPLATE_DEBUG
  638. --------------
  639. Default: ``False``
  640. A boolean that turns on/off template debug mode. If this is ``True``, the fancy
  641. error page will display a detailed report for any ``TemplateSyntaxError``. This
  642. report contains the relevant snippet of the template, with the appropriate line
  643. highlighted.
  644. Note that Django only displays fancy error pages if ``DEBUG`` is ``True``, so
  645. you'll want to set that to take advantage of this setting.
  646. See also ``DEBUG``.
  647. .. setting:: TEMPLATE_DIRS
  648. TEMPLATE_DIRS
  649. -------------
  650. Default: ``()`` (Empty tuple)
  651. List of locations of the template source files, in search order. Note that
  652. these paths should use Unix-style forward slashes, even on Windows.
  653. See :ref:`topics-templates`..
  654. .. setting:: TEMPLATE_LOADERS
  655. TEMPLATE_LOADERS
  656. ----------------
  657. Default::
  658. ('django.template.loaders.filesystem.load_template_source',
  659. 'django.template.loaders.app_directories.load_template_source')
  660. A tuple of callables (as strings) that know how to import templates from
  661. various sources. See :ref:`ref-templates-api`.
  662. .. setting:: TEMPLATE_STRING_IF_INVALID
  663. TEMPLATE_STRING_IF_INVALID
  664. --------------------------
  665. Default: ``''`` (Empty string)
  666. Output, as a string, that the template system should use for invalid (e.g.
  667. misspelled) variables. See :ref:`invalid-template-variables`..
  668. .. setting:: TEST_DATABASE_CHARSET
  669. TEST_DATABASE_CHARSET
  670. ---------------------
  671. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  672. Default: ``None``
  673. The character set encoding used to create the test database. The value of this
  674. string is passed directly through to the database, so its format is
  675. backend-specific.
  676. Supported for the PostgreSQL_ (``postgresql``, ``postgresql_psycopg2``) and MySQL_ (``mysql``) backends.
  677. .. _PostgreSQL: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.2/static/multibyte.html
  678. .. _MySQL: http://www.mysql.org/doc/refman/5.0/en/charset-database.html
  679. .. setting:: TEST_DATABASE_COLLATION
  680. TEST_DATABASE_COLLATION
  681. ------------------------
  682. .. versionadded:: 1.0
  683. Default: ``None``
  684. The collation order to use when creating the test database. This value is
  685. passed directly to the backend, so its format is backend-specific.
  686. Only supported for the ``mysql`` backend (see `section 10.3.2`_ of the MySQL
  687. manual for details).
  688. .. _section 10.3.2: http://www.mysql.org/doc/refman/5.0/en/charset-database.html
  689. .. setting:: TEST_DATABASE_NAME
  690. TEST_DATABASE_NAME
  691. ------------------
  692. Default: ``None``
  693. The name of database to use when running the test suite.
  694. If the default value (``None``) is used with the SQLite database engine, the
  695. tests will use a memory resident database. For all other database engines the
  696. test database will use the name ``'test_' + settings.DATABASE_NAME``.
  697. See :ref:`topics-testing`.
  698. .. setting:: TEST_RUNNER
  699. TEST_RUNNER
  700. -----------
  701. Default: ``'django.test.simple.run_tests'``
  702. The name of the method to use for starting the test suite. See
  703. :ref:`topics-testing`.
  704. .. _Testing Django Applications: ../testing/
  705. .. setting:: TIME_FORMAT
  706. TIME_FORMAT
  707. -----------
  708. Default: ``'P'`` (e.g. ``4 p.m.``)
  709. The default formatting to use for time fields on Django admin change-list
  710. pages -- and, possibly, by other parts of the system. See
  711. :ttag:`allowed date format strings <now>`.
  712. See also ``DATE_FORMAT``, ``DATETIME_FORMAT``, ``TIME_FORMAT``,
  713. ``YEAR_MONTH_FORMAT`` and ``MONTH_DAY_FORMAT``.
  714. .. setting:: TIME_ZONE
  715. TIME_ZONE
  716. ---------
  717. Default: ``'America/Chicago'``
  718. A string representing the time zone for this installation. `See available choices`_.
  719. (Note that list of available choices lists more than one on the same line;
  720. you'll want to use just one of the choices for a given time zone. For instance,
  721. one line says ``'Europe/London GB GB-Eire'``, but you should use the first bit
  722. of that -- ``'Europe/London'`` -- as your ``TIME_ZONE`` setting.)
  723. Note that this is the time zone to which Django will convert all dates/times --
  724. not necessarily the timezone of the server. For example, one server may serve
  725. multiple Django-powered sites, each with a separate time-zone setting.
  726. Normally, Django sets the ``os.environ['TZ']`` variable to the time zone you
  727. specify in the ``TIME_ZONE`` setting. Thus, all your views and models will
  728. automatically operate in the correct time zone. However, if you're manually
  729. :ref:`manually configuring settings
  730. <settings-without-django-settings-module>`, Django will *not* touch the ``TZ``
  731. environment variable, and it'll be up to you to ensure your processes are
  732. running in the correct environment.
  733. .. note::
  734. Django cannot reliably use alternate time zones in a Windows environment.
  735. If you're running Django on Windows, this variable must be set to match the
  736. system timezone.
  737. .. _See available choices: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.1/static/datetime-keywords.html#DATETIME-TIMEZONE-SET-TABLE
  738. .. setting:: URL_VALIDATOR_USER_AGENT
  739. URL_VALIDATOR_USER_AGENT
  740. ------------------------
  741. Default: ``Django/<version> (http://www.djangoproject.com/)``
  742. The string to use as the ``User-Agent`` header when checking to see if URLs
  743. exist (see the ``verify_exists`` option on :class:`~django.db.models.URLField`).
  744. .. setting:: USE_ETAGS
  745. USE_ETAGS
  746. ---------
  747. Default: ``False``
  748. A boolean that specifies whether to output the "Etag" header. This saves
  749. bandwidth but slows down performance. This is only used if ``CommonMiddleware``
  750. is installed (see :ref:`topics-http-middleware`).
  751. .. setting:: USE_I18N
  752. USE_I18N
  753. --------
  754. Default: ``True``
  755. A boolean that specifies whether Django's internationalization system should be
  756. enabled. This provides an easy way to turn it off, for performance. If this is
  757. set to ``False``, Django will make some optimizations so as not to load the
  758. internationalization machinery.
  759. .. setting:: YEAR_MONTH_FORMAT
  760. YEAR_MONTH_FORMAT
  761. -----------------
  762. Default: ``'F Y'``
  763. The default formatting to use for date fields on Django admin change-list
  764. pages -- and, possibly, by other parts of the system -- in cases when only the
  765. year and month are displayed.
  766. For example, when a Django admin change-list page is being filtered by a date
  767. drilldown, the header for a given month displays the month and the year.
  768. Different locales have different formats. For example, U.S. English would say
  769. "January 2006," whereas another locale might say "2006/January."
  770. See :ttag:`allowed date format strings <now>`. See also ``DATE_FORMAT``,
  771. ``DATETIME_FORMAT``, ``TIME_FORMAT`` and ``MONTH_DAY_FORMAT``.
