  2. The ``staticfiles`` app
  3. =======================
  4. .. module:: django.contrib.staticfiles
  5. :synopsis: An app for handling static files.
  6. ``django.contrib.staticfiles`` collects static files from each of your
  7. applications (and any other places you specify) into a single location that
  8. can easily be served in production.
  9. .. seealso::
  10. For an introduction to the static files app and some usage examples, see
  11. :doc:`/howto/static-files/index`. For guidelines on deploying static files,
  12. see :doc:`/howto/static-files/deployment`.
  13. .. _staticfiles-settings:
  14. Settings
  15. ========
  16. See :ref:`staticfiles settings <settings-staticfiles>` for details on the
  17. following settings:
  18. * :setting:`STATIC_ROOT`
  19. * :setting:`STATIC_URL`
  20. * :setting:`STATICFILES_DIRS`
  21. * :setting:`STATICFILES_STORAGE`
  22. * :setting:`STATICFILES_FINDERS`
  23. Management Commands
  24. ===================
  25. ``django.contrib.staticfiles`` exposes three management commands.
  26. ``collectstatic``
  27. -----------------
  28. .. django-admin:: collectstatic
  29. Collects the static files into :setting:`STATIC_ROOT`.
  30. Duplicate file names are by default resolved in a similar way to how template
  31. resolution works: the file that is first found in one of the specified
  32. locations will be used. If you're confused, the :djadmin:`findstatic` command
  33. can help show you which files are found.
  34. On subsequent ``collectstatic`` runs (if ``STATIC_ROOT`` isn't empty), files
  35. are copied only if they have a modified timestamp greater than the timestamp of
  36. the file in ``STATIC_ROOT``. Therefore if you remove an application from
  37. :setting:`INSTALLED_APPS`, it's a good idea to use the :option:`collectstatic
  38. --clear` option in order to remove stale static files.
  39. Files are searched by using the :setting:`enabled finders
  40. <STATICFILES_FINDERS>`. The default is to look in all locations defined in
  41. :setting:`STATICFILES_DIRS` and in the ``'static'`` directory of apps
  42. specified by the :setting:`INSTALLED_APPS` setting.
  43. The :djadmin:`collectstatic` management command calls the
  44. :meth:`~django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.StaticFilesStorage.post_process`
  45. method of the :setting:`STATICFILES_STORAGE` after each run and passes
  46. a list of paths that have been found by the management command. It also
  47. receives all command line options of :djadmin:`collectstatic`. This is used
  48. by the :class:`~django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage`
  49. by default.
  50. By default, collected files receive permissions from
  51. :setting:`FILE_UPLOAD_PERMISSIONS` and collected directories receive permissions
  52. from :setting:`FILE_UPLOAD_DIRECTORY_PERMISSIONS`. If you would like different
  53. permissions for these files and/or directories, you can subclass either of the
  54. :ref:`static files storage classes <staticfiles-storages>` and specify the
  55. ``file_permissions_mode`` and/or ``directory_permissions_mode`` parameters,
  56. respectively. For example::
  57. from django.contrib.staticfiles import storage
  58. class MyStaticFilesStorage(storage.StaticFilesStorage):
  59. def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs):
  60. kwargs['file_permissions_mode'] = 0o640
  61. kwargs['directory_permissions_mode'] = 0o760
  62. super().__init__(*args, **kwargs)
  63. Then set the :setting:`STATICFILES_STORAGE` setting to
  64. ``'path.to.MyStaticFilesStorage'``.
  65. Some commonly used options are:
  66. .. django-admin-option:: --noinput, --no-input
  67. Do NOT prompt the user for input of any kind.
  68. .. django-admin-option:: --ignore PATTERN, -i PATTERN
  69. Ignore files, directories, or paths matching this glob-style pattern. Use
  70. multiple times to ignore more. When specifying a path, always use forward
  71. slashes, even on Windows.
  72. .. versionchanged:: 2.2
  73. Path matching was added.
  74. .. django-admin-option:: --dry-run, -n
  75. Do everything except modify the filesystem.
  76. .. django-admin-option:: --clear, -c
  77. Clear the existing files before trying to copy or link the original file.
  78. .. django-admin-option:: --link, -l
  79. Create a symbolic link to each file instead of copying.
  80. .. django-admin-option:: --no-post-process
  81. Don't call the
  82. :meth:`~django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.StaticFilesStorage.post_process`
  83. method of the configured :setting:`STATICFILES_STORAGE` storage backend.
  84. .. django-admin-option:: --no-default-ignore
  85. Don't ignore the common private glob-style patterns ``'CVS'``, ``'.*'``
  86. and ``'*~'``.
  87. For a full list of options, refer to the commands own help by running:
  88. .. console::
  89. $ python manage.py collectstatic --help
  90. .. _customize-staticfiles-ignore-patterns:
  91. Customizing the ignored pattern list
  92. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  93. The default ignored pattern list, ``['CVS', '.*', '*~']``, can be customized in
  94. a more persistent way than providing the ``--ignore`` command option at each
  95. ``collectstatic`` invocation. Provide a custom :class:`~django.apps.AppConfig`
  96. class, override the ``ignore_patterns`` attribute of this class and replace
  97. ``'django.contrib.staticfiles'`` with that class path in your
  98. :setting:`INSTALLED_APPS` setting:
  99. .. code-block:: python
  100. from django.contrib.staticfiles.apps import StaticFilesConfig
  101. class MyStaticFilesConfig(StaticFilesConfig):
  102. ignore_patterns = [...] # your custom ignore list
  103. ``findstatic``
  104. --------------
  105. .. django-admin:: findstatic staticfile [staticfile ...]
  106. Searches for one or more relative paths with the enabled finders.
  107. For example:
  108. .. console::
  109. $ python manage.py findstatic css/base.css admin/js/core.js
  110. Found 'css/base.css' here:
  111. /home/special.polls.com/core/static/css/base.css
  112. /home/polls.com/core/static/css/base.css
  113. Found 'admin/js/core.js' here:
  114. /home/polls.com/src/django/contrib/admin/media/js/core.js
  115. .. django-admin-option:: findstatic --first
  116. By default, all matching locations are found. To only return the first match
  117. for each relative path, use the ``--first`` option:
  118. .. console::
  119. $ python manage.py findstatic css/base.css --first
  120. Found 'css/base.css' here:
  121. /home/special.polls.com/core/static/css/base.css
  122. This is a debugging aid; it'll show you exactly which static file will be
  123. collected for a given path.
  124. By setting the ``--verbosity`` flag to 0, you can suppress the extra output and
  125. just get the path names:
  126. .. console::
  127. $ python manage.py findstatic css/base.css --verbosity 0
  128. /home/special.polls.com/core/static/css/base.css
  129. /home/polls.com/core/static/css/base.css
  130. On the other hand, by setting the ``--verbosity`` flag to 2, you can get all
  131. the directories which were searched:
  132. .. console::
  133. $ python manage.py findstatic css/base.css --verbosity 2
  134. Found 'css/base.css' here:
  135. /home/special.polls.com/core/static/css/base.css
  136. /home/polls.com/core/static/css/base.css
  137. Looking in the following locations:
  138. /home/special.polls.com/core/static
  139. /home/polls.com/core/static
  140. /some/other/path/static
  141. .. _staticfiles-runserver:
  142. ``runserver``
  143. -------------
  144. .. django-admin:: runserver [addrport]
  145. Overrides the core :djadmin:`runserver` command if the ``staticfiles`` app
  146. is :setting:`installed<INSTALLED_APPS>` and adds automatic serving of static
  147. files. File serving doesn't run through :setting:`MIDDLEWARE`.
  148. The command adds these options:
  149. .. django-admin-option:: --nostatic
  150. Use the ``--nostatic`` option to disable serving of static files with the
  151. :doc:`staticfiles </ref/contrib/staticfiles>` app entirely. This option is
  152. only available if the :doc:`staticfiles </ref/contrib/staticfiles>` app is
  153. in your project's :setting:`INSTALLED_APPS` setting.
  154. Example usage:
  155. .. console::
  156. $ django-admin runserver --nostatic
  157. .. django-admin-option:: --insecure
  158. Use the ``--insecure`` option to force serving of static files with the
  159. :doc:`staticfiles </ref/contrib/staticfiles>` app even if the :setting:`DEBUG`
  160. setting is ``False``. By using this you acknowledge the fact that it's
  161. **grossly inefficient** and probably **insecure**. This is only intended for
  162. local development, should **never be used in production** and is only
  163. available if the :doc:`staticfiles </ref/contrib/staticfiles>` app is
  164. in your project's :setting:`INSTALLED_APPS` setting.
  165. ``--insecure`` doesn't work with :class:`~.storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage`.
  166. Example usage:
  167. .. console::
  168. $ django-admin runserver --insecure
  169. .. _staticfiles-storages:
  170. Storages
  171. ========
  172. ``StaticFilesStorage``
  173. ----------------------
  174. .. class:: storage.StaticFilesStorage
  175. A subclass of the :class:`~django.core.files.storage.FileSystemStorage`
  176. storage backend that uses the :setting:`STATIC_ROOT` setting as the base
  177. file system location and the :setting:`STATIC_URL` setting respectively
  178. as the base URL.
  179. .. method:: storage.StaticFilesStorage.post_process(paths, **options)
  180. If this method is defined on a storage, it's called by the
  181. :djadmin:`collectstatic` management command after each run and gets passed the
  182. local storages and paths of found files as a dictionary, as well as the command
  183. line options. It yields tuples of three values:
  184. ``original_path, processed_path, processed``. The path values are strings and
  185. ``processed`` is a boolean indicating whether or not the value was
  186. post-processed, or an exception if post-processing failed.
  187. The :class:`~django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage`
  188. uses this behind the scenes to replace the paths with their hashed
  189. counterparts and update the cache appropriately.
  190. ``ManifestStaticFilesStorage``
  191. ------------------------------
  192. .. class:: storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage
  193. A subclass of the :class:`~django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.StaticFilesStorage`
  194. storage backend which stores the file names it handles by appending the MD5
  195. hash of the file's content to the filename. For example, the file
  196. ``css/styles.css`` would also be saved as ``css/styles.55e7cbb9ba48.css``.
  197. The purpose of this storage is to keep serving the old files in case some
  198. pages still refer to those files, e.g. because they are cached by you or
  199. a 3rd party proxy server. Additionally, it's very helpful if you want to
  200. apply `far future Expires headers`_ to the deployed files to speed up the
  201. load time for subsequent page visits.
  202. The storage backend automatically replaces the paths found in the saved
  203. files matching other saved files with the path of the cached copy (using
  204. the :meth:`~django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.StaticFilesStorage.post_process`
  205. method). The regular expressions used to find those paths
  206. (``django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.HashedFilesMixin.patterns``)
  207. by default covers the `@import`_ rule and `url()`_ statement of `Cascading
  208. Style Sheets`_. For example, the ``'css/styles.css'`` file with the
  209. content
  210. .. code-block:: css
  211. @import url("../admin/css/base.css");
  212. would be replaced by calling the :meth:`~django.core.files.storage.Storage.url`
  213. method of the ``ManifestStaticFilesStorage`` storage backend, ultimately
  214. saving a ``'css/styles.55e7cbb9ba48.css'`` file with the following
  215. content:
  216. .. code-block:: css
  217. @import url("../admin/css/base.27e20196a850.css");
  218. .. attribute:: storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage.max_post_process_passes
  219. Since static files might reference other static files that need to have their
  220. paths replaced, multiple passes of replacing paths may be needed until the file
  221. hashes converge. To prevent an infinite loop due to hashes not converging (for
  222. example, if ``'foo.css'`` references ``'bar.css'`` which references
  223. ``'foo.css'``) there is a maximum number of passes before post-processing is
  224. abandoned. In cases with a large number of references, a higher number of
  225. passes might be needed. Increase the maximum number of passes by subclassing
  226. ``ManifestStaticFilesStorage`` and setting the ``max_post_process_passes``
  227. attribute. It defaults to 5.
  228. To enable the ``ManifestStaticFilesStorage`` you have to make sure the
  229. following requirements are met:
  230. * the :setting:`STATICFILES_STORAGE` setting is set to
  231. ``'django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage'``
  232. * the :setting:`DEBUG` setting is set to ``False``
  233. * you've collected all your static files by using the
  234. :djadmin:`collectstatic` management command
  235. Since creating the MD5 hash can be a performance burden to your website
  236. during runtime, ``staticfiles`` will automatically store the mapping with
  237. hashed names for all processed files in a file called ``staticfiles.json``.
  238. This happens once when you run the :djadmin:`collectstatic` management
  239. command.
  240. .. attribute:: storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage.manifest_strict
  241. If a file isn't found in the ``staticfiles.json`` manifest at runtime, a
  242. ``ValueError`` is raised. This behavior can be disabled by subclassing
  243. ``ManifestStaticFilesStorage`` and setting the ``manifest_strict`` attribute to
  244. ``False`` -- nonexistent paths will remain unchanged.
  245. Due to the requirement of running :djadmin:`collectstatic`, this storage
  246. typically shouldn't be used when running tests as ``collectstatic`` isn't run
  247. as part of the normal test setup. During testing, ensure that the
  248. :setting:`STATICFILES_STORAGE` setting is set to something else like
  249. ``'django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.StaticFilesStorage'`` (the default).
  250. .. method:: storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage.file_hash(name, content=None)
  251. The method that is used when creating the hashed name of a file.
  252. Needs to return a hash for the given file name and content.
  253. By default it calculates a MD5 hash from the content's chunks as
  254. mentioned above. Feel free to override this method to use your own
  255. hashing algorithm.

  260. ``CachedStaticFilesStorage``
  261. ----------------------------
  262. .. class:: storage.CachedStaticFilesStorage
  263. .. deprecated:: 2.2
  264. ``CachedStaticFilesStorage`` is deprecated as it has some intractable
  265. problems, some of which are outlined below. Use
  266. :class:`~storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage` or a third-party cloud storage
  267. instead.
  268. ``CachedStaticFilesStorage`` is a similar class like the
  269. :class:`~django.contrib.staticfiles.storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage` class
  270. but uses Django's :doc:`caching framework</topics/cache>` for storing the
  271. hashed names of processed files instead of a static manifest file called
  272. ``staticfiles.json``. This is mostly useful for situations in which you don't
  273. have access to the file system.
  274. If you want to override certain options of the cache backend the storage uses,
  275. specify a custom entry in the :setting:`CACHES` setting named
  276. ``'staticfiles'``. It falls back to using the ``'default'`` cache backend.
  277. .. warning::
  278. ``CachedStaticFilesStorage`` isn't recommended -- in almost all cases
  279. ``ManifestStaticFilesStorage`` is a better choice. There are several
  280. performance penalties when using ``CachedStaticFilesStorage`` since a cache
  281. miss requires hashing files at runtime. Remote file storage require several
  282. round-trips to hash a file on a cache miss, as several file accesses are
  283. required to ensure that the file hash is correct in the case of nested file
  284. paths.
  285. ``ManifestFilesMixin``
  286. ----------------------
  287. .. class:: storage.ManifestFilesMixin
  288. Use this mixin with a custom storage to append the MD5 hash of the file's
  289. content to the filename as :class:`~storage.ManifestStaticFilesStorage` does.
  290. Finders Module
  291. ==============
  292. ``staticfiles`` finders has a ``searched_locations`` attribute which is a list
  293. of directory paths in which the finders searched. Example usage::
  294. from django.contrib.staticfiles import finders
  295. result = finders.find('css/base.css')
  296. searched_locations = finders.searched_locations
  297. Other Helpers
  298. =============
  299. There are a few other helpers outside of the
  300. :mod:`staticfiles <django.contrib.staticfiles>` app to work with static
  301. files:
  302. - The :func:`django.template.context_processors.static` context processor
  303. which adds :setting:`STATIC_URL` to every template context rendered
  304. with :class:`~django.template.RequestContext` contexts.
  305. - The builtin template tag :ttag:`static` which takes a path and urljoins it
  306. with the static prefix :setting:`STATIC_URL`. If
  307. ``django.contrib.staticfiles`` is installed, the tag uses the ``url()``
  308. method of the :setting:`STATICFILES_STORAGE` instead.
  309. - The builtin template tag :ttag:`get_static_prefix` which populates a
  310. template variable with the static prefix :setting:`STATIC_URL` to be
  311. used as a variable or directly.
  312. - The similar template tag :ttag:`get_media_prefix` which works like
  313. :ttag:`get_static_prefix` but uses :setting:`MEDIA_URL`.
  314. .. _staticfiles-development-view:
  315. Static file development view
  316. ----------------------------
  317. .. currentmodule:: django.contrib.staticfiles
  318. The static files tools are mostly designed to help with getting static files
  319. successfully deployed into production. This usually means a separate,
  320. dedicated static file server, which is a lot of overhead to mess with when
  321. developing locally. Thus, the ``staticfiles`` app ships with a
  322. **quick and dirty helper view** that you can use to serve files locally in
  323. development.
  324. .. function:: views.serve(request, path)
  325. This view function serves static files in development.
  326. .. warning::
  327. This view will only work if :setting:`DEBUG` is ``True``.
  328. That's because this view is **grossly inefficient** and probably
  329. **insecure**. This is only intended for local development, and should
  330. **never be used in production**.
  331. .. note::
  332. To guess the served files' content types, this view relies on the
  333. :py:mod:`mimetypes` module from the Python standard library, which itself
  334. relies on the underlying platform's map files. If you find that this view
  335. doesn't return proper content types for certain files, it is most likely
  336. that the platform's map files need to be updated. This can be achieved, for
  337. example, by installing or updating the ``mailcap`` package on a Red Hat
  338. distribution, or ``mime-support`` on a Debian distribution.
  339. This view is automatically enabled by :djadmin:`runserver` (with a
  340. :setting:`DEBUG` setting set to ``True``). To use the view with a different
  341. local development server, add the following snippet to the end of your
  342. primary URL configuration::
  343. from django.conf import settings
  344. from django.contrib.staticfiles import views
  345. from django.urls import re_path
  346. if settings.DEBUG:
  347. urlpatterns += [
  348. re_path(r'^static/(?P<path>.*)$', views.serve),
  349. ]
  350. Note, the beginning of the pattern (``r'^static/'``) should be your
  351. :setting:`STATIC_URL` setting.
  352. Since this is a bit finicky, there's also a helper function that'll do this for
  353. you:
  354. .. function:: urls.staticfiles_urlpatterns()
  355. This will return the proper URL pattern for serving static files to your
  356. already defined pattern list. Use it like this::
  357. from django.contrib.staticfiles.urls import staticfiles_urlpatterns
  358. # ... the rest of your URLconf here ...
  359. urlpatterns += staticfiles_urlpatterns()
  360. This will inspect your :setting:`STATIC_URL` setting and wire up the view
  361. to serve static files accordingly. Don't forget to set the
  362. :setting:`STATICFILES_DIRS` setting appropriately to let
  363. ``django.contrib.staticfiles`` know where to look for files in addition to
  364. files in app directories.
  365. .. warning::
  366. This helper function will only work if :setting:`DEBUG` is ``True``
  367. and your :setting:`STATIC_URL` setting is neither empty nor a full
  368. URL such as ``http://static.example.com/``.
  369. That's because this view is **grossly inefficient** and probably
  370. **insecure**. This is only intended for local development, and should
  371. **never be used in production**.
  372. Specialized test case to support 'live testing'
  373. -----------------------------------------------
  374. .. class:: testing.StaticLiveServerTestCase
  375. This unittest TestCase subclass extends :class:`django.test.LiveServerTestCase`.
  376. Just like its parent, you can use it to write tests that involve running the
  377. code under test and consuming it with testing tools through HTTP (e.g. Selenium,
  378. PhantomJS, etc.), because of which it's needed that the static assets are also
  379. published.
  380. But given the fact that it makes use of the
  381. :func:`django.contrib.staticfiles.views.serve` view described above, it can
  382. transparently overlay at test execution-time the assets provided by the
  383. ``staticfiles`` finders. This means you don't need to run
  384. :djadmin:`collectstatic` before or as a part of your tests setup.
