  572. * The ``SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS`` setting will be removed. Add the
  573. :class:`django.middleware.common.BrokenLinkEmailsMiddleware` middleware to
  574. your ``MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES`` setting instead.
  575. * ``django.middleware.doc.XViewMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  576. ``django.contrib.admindocs.middleware.XViewMiddleware`` instead.
  577. * ``Model._meta.module_name`` was renamed to ``model_name``.
  578. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename ``get_query_set``
  579. and similar queryset methods. This affects the following classes:
  580. ``BaseModelAdmin``, ``ChangeList``, ``BaseCommentNode``,
  581. ``GenericForeignKey``, ``Manager``, ``SingleRelatedObjectDescriptor`` and
  582. ``ReverseSingleRelatedObjectDescriptor``.
  583. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename the attributes
  584. ``ChangeList.root_query_set`` and ``ChangeList.query_set``.
  585. * ``django.views.defaults.shortcut`` will be removed, as part of the
  586. goal of removing all ``django.contrib`` references from the core
  587. Django codebase. Instead use
  588. ``django.contrib.contenttypes.views.shortcut``. ``django.conf.urls.shortcut``
  589. will also be removed.
  590. * Support for the Python Imaging Library (PIL) module will be removed, as it
  591. no longer appears to be actively maintained & does not work on Python 3.
  592. * The following private APIs will be removed:
  593. - ``django.db.backend``
  594. - ``django.db.close_connection()``
  595. - ``django.db.backends.creation.BaseDatabaseCreation.set_autocommit()``
  596. - ``django.db.transaction.is_managed()``
  597. - ``django.db.transaction.managed()``
  598. * ``django.forms.widgets.RadioInput`` will be removed in favor of
  599. ``django.forms.widgets.RadioChoiceInput``.
  600. * The module ``django.test.simple`` and the class
  601. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestSuiteRunner`` will be removed. Instead use
  602. ``django.test.runner.DiscoverRunner``.
  603. * The module ``django.test._doctest`` will be removed. Instead use the doctest
  604. module from the Python standard library.
  605. * The ``CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_ANONYMOUS_ONLY`` setting will be removed.
  606. * Usage of the hard-coded *Hold down "Control", or "Command" on a Mac, to select
  607. more than one.* string to override or append to user-provided ``help_text`` in
  608. forms for ManyToMany model fields will not be performed by Django anymore
  609. either at the model or forms layer.
  610. * The ``Model._meta.get_(add|change|delete)_permission`` methods will
  611. be removed.
  612. * The session key ``django_language`` will no longer be read for backwards
  613. compatibility.
  614. * Geographic Sitemaps will be removed
  615. (``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.index`` and
  616. ``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.sitemap``).
  617. * ``django.utils.html.fix_ampersands``, the ``fix_ampersands`` template filter and
  618. ``django.utils.html.clean_html`` will be removed following an accelerated deprecation.
  619. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.7:
  620. 1.7
  621. ---
  622. See the :ref:`Django 1.5 release notes<deprecated-features-1.5>` for more
  623. details on these changes.
  624. * The module ``django.utils.simplejson`` will be removed. The standard library
  625. provides :mod:`json` which should be used instead.
  626. * The function ``django.utils.itercompat.product`` will be removed. The Python
  627. builtin version should be used instead.
  628. * Auto-correction of INSTALLED_APPS and TEMPLATE_DIRS settings when they are
  629. specified as a plain string instead of a tuple will be removed and raise an
  630. exception.
  631. * The ``mimetype`` argument to the ``__init__`` methods of
  632. :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse`,
  633. :class:`~django.template.response.SimpleTemplateResponse`, and
  634. :class:`~django.template.response.TemplateResponse`, will be removed.
  635. ``content_type`` should be used instead. This also applies to the
  636. ``render_to_response()`` shortcut and the sitemap views,
  637. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.index` and
  638. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.sitemap`.
  639. * When :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse` is instantiated with an iterator,
  640. or when :attr:`~django.http.HttpResponse.content` is set to an iterator,
  641. that iterator will be immediately consumed.
  642. * The ``AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE`` setting, and the ``get_profile()`` method on
  643. the User model, will be removed.
  644. * The ``cleanup`` management command will be removed. It's replaced by
  645. ``clearsessions``.
  646. * The ``daily_cleanup.py`` script will be removed.
  647. * The ``depth`` keyword argument will be removed from
  648. :meth:`~django.db.models.query.QuerySet.select_related`.
  649. * The undocumented ``get_warnings_state()``/``restore_warnings_state()``
  650. functions from :mod:`django.test.utils` and the ``save_warnings_state()``/
  651. ``restore_warnings_state()``
  652. :ref:`django.test.*TestCase <django-testcase-subclasses>` methods are
  653. deprecated. Use the :class:`warnings.catch_warnings` context manager
  654. available starting with Python 2.6 instead.
  655. * The undocumented ``check_for_test_cookie`` method in
  656. :class:`~django.contrib.auth.forms.AuthenticationForm` will be removed
  657. following an accelerated deprecation. Users subclassing this form should
  658. remove calls to this method, and instead ensure that their auth related views
  659. are CSRF protected, which ensures that cookies are enabled.
  660. * The version of ``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm()`` that
  661. supports base36 encoded user IDs
  662. (``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm_uidb36``) will be
  663. removed. If your site has been running Django 1.6 for more than
  664. ``PASSWORD_RESET_TIMEOUT_DAYS``, this change will have no effect. If not,
  665. then any password reset links generated before you upgrade to Django 1.7
  666. won't work after the upgrade.
  667. * The ``django.utils.encoding.StrAndUnicode`` mix-in will be removed.
  668. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.6:
  669. 1.6
  670. ---
  671. See the :ref:`Django 1.4 release notes<deprecated-features-1.4>` for more
  672. details on these changes.
  673. * ``django.contrib.databrowse`` will be removed.
  674. * ``django.contrib.localflavor`` will be removed following an accelerated
  675. deprecation.
  676. * ``django.contrib.markup`` will be removed following an accelerated
  677. deprecation.
  678. * The compatibility modules ``django.utils.copycompat`` and
  679. ``django.utils.hashcompat`` as well as the functions
  680. ``django.utils.itercompat.all`` and ``django.utils.itercompat.any`` will
  681. be removed. The Python builtin versions should be used instead.
  682. * The ``csrf_response_exempt`` and ``csrf_view_exempt`` decorators will
  683. be removed. Since 1.4 ``csrf_response_exempt`` has been a no-op (it
  684. returns the same function), and ``csrf_view_exempt`` has been a
  685. synonym for ``django.views.decorators.csrf.csrf_exempt``, which should
  686. be used to replace it.
  687. * The ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.CacheClass`` backend
  688. was split into two in Django 1.3 in order to introduce support for
  689. PyLibMC. The historical ``CacheClass`` will be removed in favor of
  690. ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.MemcachedCache``.
  691. * The UK-prefixed objects of ``django.contrib.localflavor.uk`` will only
  692. be accessible through their GB-prefixed names (GB is the correct
  693. ISO 3166 code for United Kingdom).
  694. * The ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS`` and ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` settings have been
  695. superseded by :setting:`IGNORABLE_404_URLS` in the 1.4 release. They will be
  696. removed.
  697. * The form wizard has been refactored to use class-based views with pluggable
  698. backends in 1.4. The previous implementation will be removed.
  699. * Legacy ways of calling
  700. :func:`~django.views.decorators.cache.cache_page` will be removed.
  701. * The backward-compatibility shim to automatically add a debug-false
  702. filter to the ``'mail_admins'`` logging handler will be removed. The
  703. :setting:`LOGGING` setting should include this filter explicitly if
  704. it is desired.
  705. * The builtin truncation functions ``django.utils.text.truncate_words()``
  706. and ``django.utils.text.truncate_html_words()`` will be removed in
  707. favor of the ``django.utils.text.Truncator`` class.
  708. * The ``django.contrib.gis.geoip.GeoIP`` class was moved to
  709. ``django.contrib.gis.geoip`` in 1.4 -- the shortcut in
  710. ``django.contrib.gis.utils`` will be removed.
  711. * ``django.conf.urls.defaults`` will be removed. The functions
  712. ``include()``, ``patterns()``, and ``url()``, plus
  713. :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler404` and :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler500`
  714. are now available through ``django.conf.urls``.
  715. * The functions ``setup_environ()`` and ``execute_manager()`` will be removed
  716. from :mod:`django.core.management`. This also means that the old (pre-1.4)
  717. style of :file:`manage.py` file will no longer work.
  718. * Setting the ``is_safe`` and ``needs_autoescape`` flags as attributes of
  719. template filter functions will no longer be supported.
  720. * The attribute ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` was renamed to ``HttpRequest.body``
  721. in 1.4. The backward compatibility will be removed --
  722. ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` will no longer work.
  723. * The value for the ``post_url_continue`` parameter in
  724. ``ModelAdmin.response_add()`` will have to be either ``None`` (to redirect
  725. to the newly created object's edit page) or a pre-formatted url. String
  726. formats, such as the previous default ``'../%s/'``, will not be accepted any
  727. more.
  728. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.5:
  729. 1.5
  730. ---
  731. See the :ref:`Django 1.3 release notes<deprecated-features-1.3>` for more
  732. details on these changes.
  733. * Starting Django without a :setting:`SECRET_KEY` will result in an exception
  734. rather than a ``DeprecationWarning``. (This is accelerated from the usual
  735. deprecation path; see the :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  736. * The ``mod_python`` request handler will be removed. The ``mod_wsgi``
  737. handler should be used instead.
  738. * The ``template`` attribute on ``django.test.client.Response``
  739. objects returned by the :ref:`test client <test-client>` will be removed.
  740. The :attr:`~django.test.Response.templates` attribute should be
  741. used instead.
  742. * The ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` will be removed.
  743. Instead use a ``unittest``-native class. The features of the
  744. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` (including fail-fast and
  745. Ctrl-C test termination) can be provided by :class:`unittest.TextTestRunner`.
  746. * The undocumented function
  747. ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.security_hash`` will be removed,
  748. instead use ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.form_hmac``
  749. * The function-based generic view modules will be removed in favor of their
  750. class-based equivalents, outlined :doc:`here
  751. </topics/class-based-views/index>`.
  752. * The ``django.core.servers.basehttp.AdminMediaHandler`` will be
  753. removed. In its place use
  754. ``django.contrib.staticfiles.handlers.StaticFilesHandler``.
  755. * The template tags library ``adminmedia`` and the template tag ``{%
  756. admin_media_prefix %}`` will be removed in favor of the generic static files
  757. handling. (This is faster than the usual deprecation path; see the
  758. :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  759. * The ``url`` and ``ssi`` template tags will be modified so that the first
  760. argument to each tag is a template variable, not an implied string. In 1.4,
  761. this behavior is provided by a version of the tag in the ``future`` template
  762. tag library.
  763. * The ``reset`` and ``sqlreset`` management commands will be removed.
  764. * Authentication backends will need to support an inactive user
  765. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions.
  766. The ``supports_inactive_user`` attribute will no longer be checked
  767. and can be removed from custom backends.
  768. * :meth:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSGeometry.transform` will raise
  769. a :class:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSException` when called
  770. on a geometry with no SRID value.
  771. * ``django.http.CompatCookie`` will be removed in favor of
  772. ``django.http.SimpleCookie``.
  773. * ``django.core.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  774. ``django.core.context_processors.PermLookupDict`` will be removed in
  775. favor of the corresponding
  776. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  777. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermLookupDict``, respectively.
  778. * The :setting:`MEDIA_URL` or :setting:`STATIC_URL` settings will be
  779. required to end with a trailing slash to ensure there is a consistent
  780. way to combine paths in templates.
  781. * ``django.db.models.fields.URLField.verify_exists`` will be removed. The
  782. feature was deprecated in 1.3.1 due to intractable security and
  783. performance issues and will follow a slightly accelerated deprecation
  784. timeframe.
  785. * Translations located under the so-called *project path* will be ignored during
  786. the translation building process performed at runtime. The
  787. :setting:`LOCALE_PATHS` setting can be used for the same task by including the
  788. filesystem path to a ``locale`` directory containing non-app-specific
  789. translations in its value.
  790. * The Markup contrib app will no longer support versions of Python-Markdown
  791. library earlier than 2.1. An accelerated timeline was used as this was
  792. a security related deprecation.
  793. * The ``CACHE_BACKEND`` setting will be removed. The cache backend(s) should be
  794. specified in the :setting:`CACHES` setting.
  795. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.4:
  796. 1.4
  797. ---
  798. See the :ref:`Django 1.2 release notes<deprecated-features-1.2>` for more
  799. details on these changes.
  800. * ``CsrfResponseMiddleware`` and ``CsrfMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  801. the ``{% csrf_token %}`` template tag inside forms to enable CSRF
  802. protection. ``CsrfViewMiddleware`` remains and is enabled by default.
  803. * The old imports for CSRF functionality (``django.contrib.csrf.*``),
  804. which moved to core in 1.2, will be removed.
  805. * The ``django.contrib.gis.db.backend`` module will be removed in favor
  806. of the specific backends.
  807. * ``SMTPConnection`` will be removed in favor of a generic email backend API.
  808. * The many to many SQL generation functions on the database backends
  809. will be removed.
  810. * The ability to use the ``DATABASE_*`` family of top-level settings to
  811. define database connections will be removed.
  812. * The ability to use shorthand notation to specify a database backend
  813. (i.e., ``sqlite3`` instead of ``django.db.backends.sqlite3``) will be
  814. removed.
  815. * The ``get_db_prep_save``, ``get_db_prep_value`` and
  816. ``get_db_prep_lookup`` methods will have to support multiple databases.
  817. * The ``Message`` model (in ``django.contrib.auth``), its related
  818. manager in the ``User`` model (``user.message_set``), and the
  819. associated methods (``user.message_set.create()`` and
  820. ``user.get_and_delete_messages()``), will be removed. The
  821. :doc:`messages framework </ref/contrib/messages>` should be used
  822. instead. The related ``messages`` variable returned by the
  823. auth context processor will also be removed. Note that this
  824. means that the admin application will depend on the messages
  825. context processor.
  826. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``obj`` parameter for
  827. permission checking. The ``supports_object_permissions`` attribute
  828. will no longer be checked and can be removed from custom backends.
  829. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``AnonymousUser`` class
  830. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions. The
  831. ``supports_anonymous_user`` variable will no longer be checked and can be
  832. removed from custom backends.
  833. * The ability to specify a callable template loader rather than a
  834. ``Loader`` class will be removed, as will the ``load_template_source``
  835. functions that are included with the built in template loaders for
  836. backwards compatibility.
  837. * ``django.utils.translation.get_date_formats()`` and
  838. ``django.utils.translation.get_partial_date_formats()``. These functions
  839. will be removed; use the locale-aware
  840. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate formats.
  841. * In ``django.forms.fields``, the constants: ``DEFAULT_DATE_INPUT_FORMATS``,
  842. ``DEFAULT_TIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` and
  843. ``DEFAULT_DATETIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` will be removed. Use
  844. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate
  845. formats.
  846. * The ability to use a function-based test runner will be removed,
  847. along with the ``django.test.simple.run_tests()`` test runner.
  848. * The ``views.feed()`` view and ``feeds.Feed`` class in
  849. ``django.contrib.syndication`` will be removed. The class-based view
  850. ``views.Feed`` should be used instead.
  851. * ``django.core.context_processors.auth``. This release will
  852. remove the old method in favor of the new method in
  853. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.auth``.
  854. * The ``postgresql`` database backend will be removed, use the
  855. ``postgresql_psycopg2`` backend instead.
  856. * The ``no`` language code will be removed and has been replaced by the
  857. ``nb`` language code.
  858. * Authentication backends will need to define the boolean attribute
  859. ``supports_inactive_user`` until version 1.5 when it will be assumed that
  860. all backends will handle inactive users.
  861. * ``django.db.models.fields.XMLField`` will be removed. This was
  862. deprecated as part of the 1.3 release. An accelerated deprecation
  863. schedule has been used because the field hasn't performed any role
  864. beyond that of a simple ``TextField`` since the removal of ``oldforms``.
  865. All uses of ``XMLField`` can be replaced with ``TextField``.
  866. * The undocumented ``mixin`` parameter to the ``open()`` method of
  867. ``django.core.files.storage.Storage`` (and subclasses) will be removed.
  868. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.3:
  869. 1.3
  870. ---
  871. See the :ref:`Django 1.1 release notes<deprecated-features-1.1>` for more
  872. details on these changes.
  873. * ``AdminSite.root()``. This method of hooking up the admin URLs will be
  874. removed in favor of including ``admin.site.urls``.
  875. * Authentication backends need to define the boolean attributes
  876. ``supports_object_permissions`` and ``supports_anonymous_user`` until
  877. version 1.4, at which point it will be assumed that all backends will
  878. support these options.
