  567. * ``django.utils.module_loading.import_by_path`` will be removed in favor of
  568. ``django.utils.module_loading.import_string``.
  569. * ``ssi`` and ``url`` template tags will be removed from the ``future`` template
  570. tag library (used during the 1.3/1.4 deprecation period).
  571. * ``django.utils.text.javascript_quote`` will be removed.
  572. * Database test settings as independent entries in the database settings,
  573. prefixed by ``TEST_``, will no longer be supported.
  574. * The ``cache_choices`` option to :class:`~django.forms.ModelChoiceField` and
  575. :class:`~django.forms.ModelMultipleChoiceField` will be removed.
  576. * The default value of the
  577. :attr:`RedirectView.permanent <django.views.generic.base.RedirectView.permanent>`
  578. attribute will change from ``True`` to ``False``.
  579. * ``django.contrib.sitemaps.FlatPageSitemap`` will be removed in favor of
  580. ``django.contrib.flatpages.sitemaps.FlatPageSitemap``.
  581. * Private API ``django.test.utils.TestTemplateLoader`` will be removed.
  582. * The ``django.contrib.contenttypes.generic`` module will be removed.
  583. * Private APIs ``django.db.models.sql.where.WhereNode.make_atom()`` and
  584. ``django.db.models.sql.where.Constraint`` will be removed.

  588. See the :ref:`Django 1.6 release notes<deprecated-features-1.6>` for more
  589. details on these changes.
  590. * ``django.contrib.comments`` will be removed.
  591. * The following transaction management APIs will be removed:
  592. - ``TransactionMiddleware``,
  593. - the decorators and context managers ``autocommit``, ``commit_on_success``,
  594. and ``commit_manually``, defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  595. - the functions ``commit_unless_managed`` and ``rollback_unless_managed``,
  596. also defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  597. - the ``TRANSACTIONS_MANAGED`` setting.
  598. * The :ttag:`cycle` and :ttag:`firstof` template tags will auto-escape their
  599. arguments. In 1.6 and 1.7, this behavior is provided by the version of these
  600. tags in the ``future`` template tag library.
  601. * The ``SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS`` setting will be removed. Add the
  602. :class:`django.middleware.common.BrokenLinkEmailsMiddleware` middleware to
  603. your ``MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES`` setting instead.
  604. * ``django.middleware.doc.XViewMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  605. ``django.contrib.admindocs.middleware.XViewMiddleware`` instead.
  606. * ``Model._meta.module_name`` was renamed to ``model_name``.
  607. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename ``get_query_set``
  608. and similar queryset methods. This affects the following classes:
  609. ``BaseModelAdmin``, ``ChangeList``, ``BaseCommentNode``,
  610. ``GenericForeignKey``, ``Manager``, ``SingleRelatedObjectDescriptor`` and
  611. ``ReverseSingleRelatedObjectDescriptor``.
  612. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename the attributes
  613. ``ChangeList.root_query_set`` and ``ChangeList.query_set``.
  614. * ``django.views.defaults.shortcut`` will be removed, as part of the
  615. goal of removing all ``django.contrib`` references from the core
  616. Django codebase. Instead use
  617. ``django.contrib.contenttypes.views.shortcut``. ``django.conf.urls.shortcut``
  618. will also be removed.
  619. * Support for the Python Imaging Library (PIL) module will be removed, as it
  620. no longer appears to be actively maintained & does not work on Python 3.
  621. * The following private APIs will be removed:
  622. - ``django.db.backend``
  623. - ``django.db.close_connection()``
  624. - ``django.db.backends.creation.BaseDatabaseCreation.set_autocommit()``
  625. - ``django.db.transaction.is_managed()``
  626. - ``django.db.transaction.managed()``
  627. * ``django.forms.widgets.RadioInput`` will be removed in favor of
  628. ``django.forms.widgets.RadioChoiceInput``.
  629. * The module ``django.test.simple`` and the class
  630. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestSuiteRunner`` will be removed. Instead use
  631. ``django.test.runner.DiscoverRunner``.
  632. * The module ``django.test._doctest`` will be removed. Instead use the doctest
  633. module from the Python standard library.
  634. * The ``CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_ANONYMOUS_ONLY`` setting will be removed.
  635. * Usage of the hard-coded *Hold down "Control", or "Command" on a Mac, to select
  636. more than one.* string to override or append to user-provided ``help_text`` in
  637. forms for ManyToMany model fields will not be performed by Django anymore
  638. either at the model or forms layer.
  639. * The ``Model._meta.get_(add|change|delete)_permission`` methods will
  640. be removed.
  641. * The session key ``django_language`` will no longer be read for backwards
  642. compatibility.
  643. * Geographic Sitemaps will be removed
  644. (``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.index`` and
  645. ``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.sitemap``).
  646. * ``django.utils.html.fix_ampersands``, the ``fix_ampersands`` template filter and
  647. ``django.utils.html.clean_html`` will be removed following an accelerated deprecation.

  649. 1.7
  650. ---
  651. See the :ref:`Django 1.5 release notes<deprecated-features-1.5>` for more
  652. details on these changes.
  653. * The module ``django.utils.simplejson`` will be removed. The standard library
  654. provides :mod:`json` which should be used instead.
  655. * The function ``django.utils.itercompat.product`` will be removed. The Python
  656. builtin version should be used instead.
  657. * Auto-correction of INSTALLED_APPS and TEMPLATE_DIRS settings when they are
  658. specified as a plain string instead of a tuple will be removed and raise an
  659. exception.
  660. * The ``mimetype`` argument to the ``__init__`` methods of
  661. :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse`,
  662. :class:`~django.template.response.SimpleTemplateResponse`, and
  663. :class:`~django.template.response.TemplateResponse`, will be removed.
  664. ``content_type`` should be used instead. This also applies to the
  665. ``render_to_response()`` shortcut and the sitemap views,
  666. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.index` and
  667. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.sitemap`.
  668. * When :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse` is instantiated with an iterator,
  669. or when :attr:`~django.http.HttpResponse.content` is set to an iterator,
  670. that iterator will be immediately consumed.
  671. * The ``AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE`` setting, and the ``get_profile()`` method on
  672. the User model, will be removed.
  673. * The ``cleanup`` management command will be removed. It's replaced by
  674. ``clearsessions``.
  675. * The ``daily_cleanup.py`` script will be removed.
  676. * The ``depth`` keyword argument will be removed from
  677. :meth:`~django.db.models.query.QuerySet.select_related`.
  678. * The undocumented ``get_warnings_state()``/``restore_warnings_state()``
  679. functions from :mod:`django.test.utils` and the ``save_warnings_state()``/
  680. ``restore_warnings_state()``
  681. :ref:`django.test.*TestCase <django-testcase-subclasses>` methods are
  682. deprecated. Use the :class:`warnings.catch_warnings` context manager
  683. available starting with Python 2.6 instead.
  684. * The undocumented ``check_for_test_cookie`` method in
  685. :class:`~django.contrib.auth.forms.AuthenticationForm` will be removed
  686. following an accelerated deprecation. Users subclassing this form should
  687. remove calls to this method, and instead ensure that their auth related views
  688. are CSRF protected, which ensures that cookies are enabled.
  689. * The version of ``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm()`` that
  690. supports base36 encoded user IDs
  691. (``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm_uidb36``) will be
  692. removed. If your site has been running Django 1.6 for more than
  693. ``PASSWORD_RESET_TIMEOUT_DAYS``, this change will have no effect. If not,
  694. then any password reset links generated before you upgrade to Django 1.7
  695. won't work after the upgrade.
  696. * The ``django.utils.encoding.StrAndUnicode`` mix-in will be removed.

  700. See the :ref:`Django 1.4 release notes<deprecated-features-1.4>` for more
  701. details on these changes.
  702. * ``django.contrib.databrowse`` will be removed.
  703. * ``django.contrib.localflavor`` will be removed following an accelerated
  704. deprecation.
  705. * ``django.contrib.markup`` will be removed following an accelerated
  706. deprecation.
  707. * The compatibility modules ``django.utils.copycompat`` and
  708. ``django.utils.hashcompat`` as well as the functions
  709. ``django.utils.itercompat.all`` and ``django.utils.itercompat.any`` will
  710. be removed. The Python builtin versions should be used instead.
  711. * The ``csrf_response_exempt`` and ``csrf_view_exempt`` decorators will
  712. be removed. Since 1.4 ``csrf_response_exempt`` has been a no-op (it
  713. returns the same function), and ``csrf_view_exempt`` has been a
  714. synonym for ``django.views.decorators.csrf.csrf_exempt``, which should
  715. be used to replace it.
  716. * The ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.CacheClass`` backend
  717. was split into two in Django 1.3 in order to introduce support for
  718. PyLibMC. The historical ``CacheClass`` will be removed in favor of
  719. ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.MemcachedCache``.
  720. * The UK-prefixed objects of ``django.contrib.localflavor.uk`` will only
  721. be accessible through their GB-prefixed names (GB is the correct
  722. ISO 3166 code for United Kingdom).
  723. * The ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS`` and ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` settings have been
  724. superseded by :setting:`IGNORABLE_404_URLS` in the 1.4 release. They will be
  725. removed.
  726. * The form wizard has been refactored to use class-based views with pluggable
  727. backends in 1.4. The previous implementation will be removed.
  728. * Legacy ways of calling
  729. :func:`~django.views.decorators.cache.cache_page` will be removed.
  730. * The backward-compatibility shim to automatically add a debug-false
  731. filter to the ``'mail_admins'`` logging handler will be removed. The
  732. :setting:`LOGGING` setting should include this filter explicitly if
  733. it is desired.
  734. * The builtin truncation functions ``django.utils.text.truncate_words()``
  735. and ``django.utils.text.truncate_html_words()`` will be removed in
  736. favor of the ``django.utils.text.Truncator`` class.
  737. * The ``django.contrib.gis.geoip.GeoIP`` class was moved to
  738. ``django.contrib.gis.geoip`` in 1.4 -- the shortcut in
  739. ``django.contrib.gis.utils`` will be removed.
  740. * ``django.conf.urls.defaults`` will be removed. The functions
  741. ``include()``, ``patterns()``, and ``url()``, plus
  742. :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler404` and :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler500`
  743. are now available through ``django.conf.urls``.
  744. * The functions ``setup_environ()`` and ``execute_manager()`` will be removed
  745. from :mod:`django.core.management`. This also means that the old (pre-1.4)
  746. style of :file:`manage.py` file will no longer work.
  747. * Setting the ``is_safe`` and ``needs_autoescape`` flags as attributes of
  748. template filter functions will no longer be supported.
  749. * The attribute ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` was renamed to ``HttpRequest.body``
  750. in 1.4. The backward compatibility will be removed --
  751. ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` will no longer work.
  752. * The value for the ``post_url_continue`` parameter in
  753. ``ModelAdmin.response_add()`` will have to be either ``None`` (to redirect
  754. to the newly created object's edit page) or a pre-formatted url. String
  755. formats, such as the previous default ``'../%s/'``, will not be accepted any
  756. more.

  760. See the :ref:`Django 1.3 release notes<deprecated-features-1.3>` for more
  761. details on these changes.
  762. * Starting Django without a :setting:`SECRET_KEY` will result in an exception
  763. rather than a ``DeprecationWarning``. (This is accelerated from the usual
  764. deprecation path; see the :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  765. * The ``mod_python`` request handler will be removed. The ``mod_wsgi``
  766. handler should be used instead.
  767. * The ``template`` attribute on ``django.test.client.Response``
  768. objects returned by the :ref:`test client <test-client>` will be removed.
  769. The :attr:`~django.test.Response.templates` attribute should be
  770. used instead.
  771. * The ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` will be removed.
  772. Instead use a ``unittest``-native class. The features of the
  773. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` (including fail-fast and
  774. Ctrl-C test termination) can be provided by :class:`unittest.TextTestRunner`.
  775. * The undocumented function
  776. ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.security_hash`` will be removed,
  777. instead use ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.form_hmac``
  778. * The function-based generic view modules will be removed in favor of their
  779. class-based equivalents, outlined :doc:`here
  780. </topics/class-based-views/index>`.
  781. * The ``django.core.servers.basehttp.AdminMediaHandler`` will be
  782. removed. In its place use
  783. ``django.contrib.staticfiles.handlers.StaticFilesHandler``.
  784. * The template tags library ``adminmedia`` and the template tag ``{%
  785. admin_media_prefix %}`` will be removed in favor of the generic static files
  786. handling. (This is faster than the usual deprecation path; see the
  787. :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  788. * The ``url`` and ``ssi`` template tags will be modified so that the first
  789. argument to each tag is a template variable, not an implied string. In 1.4,
  790. this behavior is provided by a version of the tag in the ``future`` template
  791. tag library.
  792. * The ``reset`` and ``sqlreset`` management commands will be removed.
  793. * Authentication backends will need to support an inactive user
  794. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions.
  795. The ``supports_inactive_user`` attribute will no longer be checked
  796. and can be removed from custom backends.
  797. * :meth:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSGeometry.transform` will raise
  798. a :class:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSException` when called
  799. on a geometry with no SRID value.
  800. * ``django.http.CompatCookie`` will be removed in favor of
  801. ``django.http.SimpleCookie``.
  802. * ``django.core.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  803. ``django.core.context_processors.PermLookupDict`` will be removed in
  804. favor of the corresponding
  805. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  806. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermLookupDict``, respectively.
  807. * The :setting:`MEDIA_URL` or :setting:`STATIC_URL` settings will be
  808. required to end with a trailing slash to ensure there is a consistent
  809. way to combine paths in templates.
  810. * ``django.db.models.fields.URLField.verify_exists`` will be removed. The
  811. feature was deprecated in 1.3.1 due to intractable security and
  812. performance issues and will follow a slightly accelerated deprecation
  813. timeframe.
  814. * Translations located under the so-called *project path* will be ignored during
  815. the translation building process performed at runtime. The
  816. :setting:`LOCALE_PATHS` setting can be used for the same task by including the
  817. filesystem path to a ``locale`` directory containing non-app-specific
  818. translations in its value.
  819. * The Markup contrib app will no longer support versions of Python-Markdown
  820. library earlier than 2.1. An accelerated timeline was used as this was
  821. a security related deprecation.
  822. * The ``CACHE_BACKEND`` setting will be removed. The cache backend(s) should be
  823. specified in the :setting:`CACHES` setting.
  824. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.4:
  825. 1.4
  826. ---
  827. See the :ref:`Django 1.2 release notes<deprecated-features-1.2>` for more
  828. details on these changes.
  829. * ``CsrfResponseMiddleware`` and ``CsrfMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  830. the ``{% csrf_token %}`` template tag inside forms to enable CSRF
  831. protection. ``CsrfViewMiddleware`` remains and is enabled by default.
  832. * The old imports for CSRF functionality (``django.contrib.csrf.*``),
  833. which moved to core in 1.2, will be removed.
  834. * The ``django.contrib.gis.db.backend`` module will be removed in favor
  835. of the specific backends.
  836. * ``SMTPConnection`` will be removed in favor of a generic email backend API.
  837. * The many to many SQL generation functions on the database backends
  838. will be removed.
  839. * The ability to use the ``DATABASE_*`` family of top-level settings to
  840. define database connections will be removed.
  841. * The ability to use shorthand notation to specify a database backend
  842. (i.e., ``sqlite3`` instead of ``django.db.backends.sqlite3``) will be
  843. removed.
  844. * The ``get_db_prep_save``, ``get_db_prep_value`` and
  845. ``get_db_prep_lookup`` methods will have to support multiple databases.
  846. * The ``Message`` model (in ``django.contrib.auth``), its related
  847. manager in the ``User`` model (``user.message_set``), and the
  848. associated methods (``user.message_set.create()`` and
  849. ``user.get_and_delete_messages()``), will be removed. The
  850. :doc:`messages framework </ref/contrib/messages>` should be used
  851. instead. The related ``messages`` variable returned by the
  852. auth context processor will also be removed. Note that this
  853. means that the admin application will depend on the messages
  854. context processor.
  855. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``obj`` parameter for
  856. permission checking. The ``supports_object_permissions`` attribute
  857. will no longer be checked and can be removed from custom backends.
  858. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``AnonymousUser`` class
  859. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions. The
  860. ``supports_anonymous_user`` variable will no longer be checked and can be
  861. removed from custom backends.
  862. * The ability to specify a callable template loader rather than a
  863. ``Loader`` class will be removed, as will the ``load_template_source``
  864. functions that are included with the built in template loaders for
  865. backwards compatibility.
  866. * ``django.utils.translation.get_date_formats()`` and
  867. ``django.utils.translation.get_partial_date_formats()``. These functions
  868. will be removed; use the locale-aware
  869. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate formats.
  870. * In ``django.forms.fields``, the constants: ``DEFAULT_DATE_INPUT_FORMATS``,
  871. ``DEFAULT_TIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` and
  872. ``DEFAULT_DATETIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` will be removed. Use
  873. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate
  874. formats.
  875. * The ability to use a function-based test runner will be removed,
  876. along with the ``django.test.simple.run_tests()`` test runner.
  877. * The ``views.feed()`` view and ``feeds.Feed`` class in
  878. ``django.contrib.syndication`` will be removed. The class-based view
  879. ``views.Feed`` should be used instead.
  880. * ``django.core.context_processors.auth``. This release will
  881. remove the old method in favor of the new method in
  882. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.auth``.
  883. * The ``postgresql`` database backend will be removed, use the
  884. ``postgresql_psycopg2`` backend instead.
  885. * The ``no`` language code will be removed and has been replaced by the
  886. ``nb`` language code.
  887. * Authentication backends will need to define the boolean attribute
  888. ``supports_inactive_user`` until version 1.5 when it will be assumed that
  889. all backends will handle inactive users.
  890. * ``django.db.models.fields.XMLField`` will be removed. This was
  891. deprecated as part of the 1.3 release. An accelerated deprecation
  892. schedule has been used because the field hasn't performed any role
  893. beyond that of a simple ``TextField`` since the removal of ``oldforms``.
  894. All uses of ``XMLField`` can be replaced with ``TextField``.
  895. * The undocumented ``mixin`` parameter to the ``open()`` method of
  896. ``django.core.files.storage.Storage`` (and subclasses) will be removed.

  901. details on these changes.
  902. * ``AdminSite.root()``. This method of hooking up the admin URLs will be
  903. removed in favor of including ``admin.site.urls``.
  904. * Authentication backends need to define the boolean attributes
  905. ``supports_object_permissions`` and ``supports_anonymous_user`` until
  906. version 1.4, at which point it will be assumed that all backends will
  907. support these options.
