  582. * ``django.utils.html.fix_ampersands``, the ``fix_ampersands`` template filter and
  583. ``django.utils.html.clean_html`` will be removed following an accelerated deprecation.
  584. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.7:
  585. 1.7
  586. ---
  587. See the :ref:`Django 1.5 release notes<deprecated-features-1.5>` for more
  588. details on these changes.
  589. * The module ``django.utils.simplejson`` will be removed. The standard library
  590. provides :mod:`json` which should be used instead.
  591. * The function ``django.utils.itercompat.product`` will be removed. The Python
  592. builtin version should be used instead.
  593. * Auto-correction of INSTALLED_APPS and TEMPLATE_DIRS settings when they are
  594. specified as a plain string instead of a tuple will be removed and raise an
  595. exception.
  596. * The ``mimetype`` argument to the ``__init__`` methods of
  597. :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse`,
  598. :class:`~django.template.response.SimpleTemplateResponse`, and
  599. :class:`~django.template.response.TemplateResponse`, will be removed.
  600. ``content_type`` should be used instead. This also applies to the
  601. ``render_to_response()`` shortcut and the sitemap views,
  602. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.index` and
  603. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.sitemap`.
  604. * When :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse` is instantiated with an iterator,
  605. or when :attr:`~django.http.HttpResponse.content` is set to an iterator,
  606. that iterator will be immediately consumed.
  607. * The ``AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE`` setting, and the ``get_profile()`` method on
  608. the User model, will be removed.
  609. * The ``cleanup`` management command will be removed. It's replaced by
  610. ``clearsessions``.
  611. * The ``daily_cleanup.py`` script will be removed.
  612. * The ``depth`` keyword argument will be removed from
  613. :meth:`~django.db.models.query.QuerySet.select_related`.
  614. * The undocumented ``get_warnings_state()``/``restore_warnings_state()``
  615. functions from :mod:`django.test.utils` and the ``save_warnings_state()``/
  616. ``restore_warnings_state()``
  617. :ref:`django.test.*TestCase <django-testcase-subclasses>` methods are
  618. deprecated. Use the :class:`warnings.catch_warnings` context manager
  619. available starting with Python 2.6 instead.
  620. * The undocumented ``check_for_test_cookie`` method in
  621. :class:`~django.contrib.auth.forms.AuthenticationForm` will be removed
  622. following an accelerated deprecation. Users subclassing this form should
  623. remove calls to this method, and instead ensure that their auth related views
  624. are CSRF protected, which ensures that cookies are enabled.
  625. * The version of ``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm()`` that
  626. supports base36 encoded user IDs
  627. (``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm_uidb36``) will be
  628. removed. If your site has been running Django 1.6 for more than
  629. ``PASSWORD_RESET_TIMEOUT_DAYS``, this change will have no effect. If not,
  630. then any password reset links generated before you upgrade to Django 1.7
  631. won't work after the upgrade.
  632. * The ``django.utils.encoding.StrAndUnicode`` mix-in will be removed.
  633. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.6:
  634. 1.6
  635. ---
  636. See the :ref:`Django 1.4 release notes<deprecated-features-1.4>` for more
  637. details on these changes.
  638. * ``django.contrib.databrowse`` will be removed.
  639. * ``django.contrib.localflavor`` will be removed following an accelerated
  640. deprecation.
  641. * ``django.contrib.markup`` will be removed following an accelerated
  642. deprecation.
  643. * The compatibility modules ``django.utils.copycompat`` and
  644. ``django.utils.hashcompat`` as well as the functions
  645. ``django.utils.itercompat.all`` and ``django.utils.itercompat.any`` will
  646. be removed. The Python builtin versions should be used instead.
  647. * The ``csrf_response_exempt`` and ``csrf_view_exempt`` decorators will
  648. be removed. Since 1.4 ``csrf_response_exempt`` has been a no-op (it
  649. returns the same function), and ``csrf_view_exempt`` has been a
  650. synonym for ``django.views.decorators.csrf.csrf_exempt``, which should
  651. be used to replace it.
  652. * The ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.CacheClass`` backend
  653. was split into two in Django 1.3 in order to introduce support for
  654. PyLibMC. The historical ``CacheClass`` will be removed in favor of
  655. ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.MemcachedCache``.
  656. * The UK-prefixed objects of ``django.contrib.localflavor.uk`` will only
  657. be accessible through their GB-prefixed names (GB is the correct
  658. ISO 3166 code for United Kingdom).
  659. * The ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS`` and ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` settings have been
  660. superseded by :setting:`IGNORABLE_404_URLS` in the 1.4 release. They will be
  661. removed.
  662. * The form wizard has been refactored to use class-based views with pluggable
  663. backends in 1.4. The previous implementation will be removed.
  664. * Legacy ways of calling
  665. :func:`~django.views.decorators.cache.cache_page` will be removed.
  666. * The backward-compatibility shim to automatically add a debug-false
  667. filter to the ``'mail_admins'`` logging handler will be removed. The
  668. :setting:`LOGGING` setting should include this filter explicitly if
  669. it is desired.
  670. * The builtin truncation functions ``django.utils.text.truncate_words()``
  671. and ``django.utils.text.truncate_html_words()`` will be removed in
  672. favor of the ``django.utils.text.Truncator`` class.
  673. * The ``django.contrib.gis.geoip.GeoIP`` class was moved to
  674. ``django.contrib.gis.geoip`` in 1.4 -- the shortcut in
  675. ``django.contrib.gis.utils`` will be removed.
  676. * ``django.conf.urls.defaults`` will be removed. The functions
  677. ``include()``, ``patterns()``, and ``url()``, plus
  678. :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler404` and :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler500`
  679. are now available through ``django.conf.urls``.
  680. * The functions ``setup_environ()`` and ``execute_manager()`` will be removed
  681. from :mod:`django.core.management`. This also means that the old (pre-1.4)
  682. style of :file:`manage.py` file will no longer work.
  683. * Setting the ``is_safe`` and ``needs_autoescape`` flags as attributes of
  684. template filter functions will no longer be supported.
  685. * The attribute ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` was renamed to ``HttpRequest.body``
  686. in 1.4. The backward compatibility will be removed --
  687. ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` will no longer work.
  688. * The value for the ``post_url_continue`` parameter in
  689. ``ModelAdmin.response_add()`` will have to be either ``None`` (to redirect
  690. to the newly created object's edit page) or a pre-formatted url. String
  691. formats, such as the previous default ``'../%s/'``, will not be accepted any
  692. more.

  694. 1.5
  695. ---
  696. See the :ref:`Django 1.3 release notes<deprecated-features-1.3>` for more
  697. details on these changes.
  698. * Starting Django without a :setting:`SECRET_KEY` will result in an exception
  699. rather than a ``DeprecationWarning``. (This is accelerated from the usual
  700. deprecation path; see the :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  701. * The ``mod_python`` request handler will be removed. The ``mod_wsgi``
  702. handler should be used instead.
  703. * The ``template`` attribute on ``django.test.client.Response``
  704. objects returned by the :ref:`test client <test-client>` will be removed.
  705. The :attr:`~django.test.Response.templates` attribute should be
  706. used instead.
  707. * The ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` will be removed.
  708. Instead use a ``unittest``-native class. The features of the
  709. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` (including fail-fast and
  710. Ctrl-C test termination) can be provided by :class:`unittest.TextTestRunner`.
  711. * The undocumented function
  712. ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.security_hash`` will be removed,
  713. instead use ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.form_hmac``
  714. * The function-based generic view modules will be removed in favor of their
  715. class-based equivalents, outlined :doc:`here
  716. </topics/class-based-views/index>`.
  717. * The ``django.core.servers.basehttp.AdminMediaHandler`` will be
  718. removed. In its place use
  719. ``django.contrib.staticfiles.handlers.StaticFilesHandler``.
  720. * The template tags library ``adminmedia`` and the template tag ``{%
  721. admin_media_prefix %}`` will be removed in favor of the generic static files
  722. handling. (This is faster than the usual deprecation path; see the
  723. :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  724. * The ``url`` and ``ssi`` template tags will be modified so that the first
  725. argument to each tag is a template variable, not an implied string. In 1.4,
  726. this behavior is provided by a version of the tag in the ``future`` template
  727. tag library.
  728. * The ``reset`` and ``sqlreset`` management commands will be removed.
  729. * Authentication backends will need to support an inactive user
  730. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions.
  731. The ``supports_inactive_user`` attribute will no longer be checked
  732. and can be removed from custom backends.
  733. * :meth:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSGeometry.transform` will raise
  734. a :class:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSException` when called
  735. on a geometry with no SRID value.
  736. * ``django.http.CompatCookie`` will be removed in favor of
  737. ``django.http.SimpleCookie``.
  738. * ``django.core.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  739. ``django.core.context_processors.PermLookupDict`` will be removed in
  740. favor of the corresponding
  741. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  742. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermLookupDict``, respectively.
  743. * The :setting:`MEDIA_URL` or :setting:`STATIC_URL` settings will be
  744. required to end with a trailing slash to ensure there is a consistent
  745. way to combine paths in templates.
  746. * ``django.db.models.fields.URLField.verify_exists`` will be removed. The
  747. feature was deprecated in 1.3.1 due to intractable security and
  748. performance issues and will follow a slightly accelerated deprecation
  749. timeframe.
  750. * Translations located under the so-called *project path* will be ignored during
  751. the translation building process performed at runtime. The
  752. :setting:`LOCALE_PATHS` setting can be used for the same task by including the
  753. filesystem path to a ``locale`` directory containing non-app-specific
  754. translations in its value.
  755. * The Markup contrib app will no longer support versions of Python-Markdown
  756. library earlier than 2.1. An accelerated timeline was used as this was
  757. a security related deprecation.
  758. * The ``CACHE_BACKEND`` setting will be removed. The cache backend(s) should be
  759. specified in the :setting:`CACHES` setting.
  760. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.4:
  761. 1.4
  762. ---
  763. See the :ref:`Django 1.2 release notes<deprecated-features-1.2>` for more
  764. details on these changes.
  765. * ``CsrfResponseMiddleware`` and ``CsrfMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  766. the ``{% csrf_token %}`` template tag inside forms to enable CSRF
  767. protection. ``CsrfViewMiddleware`` remains and is enabled by default.
  768. * The old imports for CSRF functionality (``django.contrib.csrf.*``),
  769. which moved to core in 1.2, will be removed.
  770. * The ``django.contrib.gis.db.backend`` module will be removed in favor
  771. of the specific backends.
  772. * ``SMTPConnection`` will be removed in favor of a generic email backend API.
  773. * The many to many SQL generation functions on the database backends
  774. will be removed.
  775. * The ability to use the ``DATABASE_*`` family of top-level settings to
  776. define database connections will be removed.
  777. * The ability to use shorthand notation to specify a database backend
  778. (i.e., ``sqlite3`` instead of ``django.db.backends.sqlite3``) will be
  779. removed.
  780. * The ``get_db_prep_save``, ``get_db_prep_value`` and
  781. ``get_db_prep_lookup`` methods will have to support multiple databases.
  782. * The ``Message`` model (in ``django.contrib.auth``), its related
  783. manager in the ``User`` model (``user.message_set``), and the
  784. associated methods (``user.message_set.create()`` and
  785. ``user.get_and_delete_messages()``), will be removed. The
  786. :doc:`messages framework </ref/contrib/messages>` should be used
  787. instead. The related ``messages`` variable returned by the
  788. auth context processor will also be removed. Note that this
  789. means that the admin application will depend on the messages
  790. context processor.
  791. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``obj`` parameter for
  792. permission checking. The ``supports_object_permissions`` attribute
  793. will no longer be checked and can be removed from custom backends.
  794. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``AnonymousUser`` class
  795. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions. The
  796. ``supports_anonymous_user`` variable will no longer be checked and can be
  797. removed from custom backends.
  798. * The ability to specify a callable template loader rather than a
  799. ``Loader`` class will be removed, as will the ``load_template_source``
  800. functions that are included with the built in template loaders for
  801. backwards compatibility.
  802. * ``django.utils.translation.get_date_formats()`` and
  803. ``django.utils.translation.get_partial_date_formats()``. These functions
  804. will be removed; use the locale-aware
  805. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate formats.
  806. * In ``django.forms.fields``, the constants: ``DEFAULT_DATE_INPUT_FORMATS``,
  807. ``DEFAULT_TIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` and
  808. ``DEFAULT_DATETIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` will be removed. Use
  809. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate
  810. formats.
  811. * The ability to use a function-based test runner will be removed,
  812. along with the ``django.test.simple.run_tests()`` test runner.
  813. * The ``views.feed()`` view and ``feeds.Feed`` class in
  814. ``django.contrib.syndication`` will be removed. The class-based view
  815. ``views.Feed`` should be used instead.
  816. * ``django.core.context_processors.auth``. This release will
  817. remove the old method in favor of the new method in
  818. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.auth``.
  819. * The ``postgresql`` database backend will be removed, use the
  820. ``postgresql_psycopg2`` backend instead.
  821. * The ``no`` language code will be removed and has been replaced by the
  822. ``nb`` language code.
  823. * Authentication backends will need to define the boolean attribute
  824. ``supports_inactive_user`` until version 1.5 when it will be assumed that
  825. all backends will handle inactive users.
  826. * ``django.db.models.fields.XMLField`` will be removed. This was
  827. deprecated as part of the 1.3 release. An accelerated deprecation
  828. schedule has been used because the field hasn't performed any role
  829. beyond that of a simple ``TextField`` since the removal of ``oldforms``.
  830. All uses of ``XMLField`` can be replaced with ``TextField``.
  831. * The undocumented ``mixin`` parameter to the ``open()`` method of
  832. ``django.core.files.storage.Storage`` (and subclasses) will be removed.

  834. 1.3
  835. ---
  836. See the :ref:`Django 1.1 release notes<deprecated-features-1.1>` for more
  837. details on these changes.
  838. * ``AdminSite.root()``. This method of hooking up the admin URLs will be
  839. removed in favor of including ``admin.site.urls``.
  840. * Authentication backends need to define the boolean attributes
  841. ``supports_object_permissions`` and ``supports_anonymous_user`` until
  842. version 1.4, at which point it will be assumed that all backends will
  843. support these options.
