  568. * Private APIs ``django.db.models.sql.where.WhereNode.make_atom()`` and
  569. ``django.db.models.sql.where.Constraint`` will be removed.
  570. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.8:
  571. 1.8
  572. ---
  573. See the :ref:`Django 1.6 release notes<deprecated-features-1.6>` for more
  574. details on these changes.
  575. * ``django.contrib.comments`` will be removed.
  576. * The following transaction management APIs will be removed:
  577. - ``TransactionMiddleware``,
  578. - the decorators and context managers ``autocommit``, ``commit_on_success``,
  579. and ``commit_manually``, defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  580. - the functions ``commit_unless_managed`` and ``rollback_unless_managed``,
  581. also defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  582. - the ``TRANSACTIONS_MANAGED`` setting.
  583. * The :ttag:`cycle` and :ttag:`firstof` template tags will auto-escape their
  584. arguments. In 1.6 and 1.7, this behavior is provided by the version of these
  585. tags in the ``future`` template tag library.
  586. * The ``SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS`` setting will be removed. Add the
  587. :class:`django.middleware.common.BrokenLinkEmailsMiddleware` middleware to
  588. your ``MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES`` setting instead.
  589. * ``django.middleware.doc.XViewMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  590. ``django.contrib.admindocs.middleware.XViewMiddleware`` instead.
  591. * ``Model._meta.module_name`` was renamed to ``model_name``.
  592. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename ``get_query_set``
  593. and similar queryset methods. This affects the following classes:
  594. ``BaseModelAdmin``, ``ChangeList``, ``BaseCommentNode``,
  595. ``GenericForeignKey``, ``Manager``, ``SingleRelatedObjectDescriptor`` and
  596. ``ReverseSingleRelatedObjectDescriptor``.
  597. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename the attributes
  598. ``ChangeList.root_query_set`` and ``ChangeList.query_set``.
  599. * ``django.views.defaults.shortcut`` will be removed, as part of the
  600. goal of removing all ``django.contrib`` references from the core
  601. Django codebase. Instead use
  602. ``django.contrib.contenttypes.views.shortcut``. ``django.conf.urls.shortcut``
  603. will also be removed.
  604. * Support for the Python Imaging Library (PIL) module will be removed, as it
  605. no longer appears to be actively maintained & does not work on Python 3.
  606. * The following private APIs will be removed:
  607. - ``django.db.backend``
  608. - ``django.db.close_connection()``
  609. - ``django.db.backends.creation.BaseDatabaseCreation.set_autocommit()``
  610. - ``django.db.transaction.is_managed()``
  611. - ``django.db.transaction.managed()``
  612. * ``django.forms.widgets.RadioInput`` will be removed in favor of
  613. ``django.forms.widgets.RadioChoiceInput``.
  614. * The module ``django.test.simple`` and the class
  615. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestSuiteRunner`` will be removed. Instead use
  616. ``django.test.runner.DiscoverRunner``.
  617. * The module ``django.test._doctest`` will be removed. Instead use the doctest
  618. module from the Python standard library.
  619. * The ``CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_ANONYMOUS_ONLY`` setting will be removed.
  620. * Usage of the hard-coded *Hold down "Control", or "Command" on a Mac, to select
  621. more than one.* string to override or append to user-provided ``help_text`` in
  622. forms for ManyToMany model fields will not be performed by Django anymore
  623. either at the model or forms layer.
  624. * The ``Model._meta.get_(add|change|delete)_permission`` methods will
  625. be removed.
  626. * The session key ``django_language`` will no longer be read for backwards
  627. compatibility.
  628. * Geographic Sitemaps will be removed
  629. (``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.index`` and
  630. ``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.sitemap``).
  631. * ``django.utils.html.fix_ampersands``, the ``fix_ampersands`` template filter and
  632. ``django.utils.html.clean_html`` will be removed following an accelerated deprecation.
  633. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.7:
  634. 1.7
  635. ---
  636. See the :ref:`Django 1.5 release notes<deprecated-features-1.5>` for more
  637. details on these changes.
  638. * The module ``django.utils.simplejson`` will be removed. The standard library
  639. provides :mod:`json` which should be used instead.
  640. * The function ``django.utils.itercompat.product`` will be removed. The Python
  641. builtin version should be used instead.
  642. * Auto-correction of INSTALLED_APPS and TEMPLATE_DIRS settings when they are
  643. specified as a plain string instead of a tuple will be removed and raise an
  644. exception.
  645. * The ``mimetype`` argument to the ``__init__`` methods of
  646. :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse`,
  647. :class:`~django.template.response.SimpleTemplateResponse`, and
  648. :class:`~django.template.response.TemplateResponse`, will be removed.
  649. ``content_type`` should be used instead. This also applies to the
  650. ``render_to_response()`` shortcut and the sitemap views,
  651. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.index` and
  652. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.sitemap`.
  653. * When :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse` is instantiated with an iterator,
  654. or when :attr:`~django.http.HttpResponse.content` is set to an iterator,
  655. that iterator will be immediately consumed.
  656. * The ``AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE`` setting, and the ``get_profile()`` method on
  657. the User model, will be removed.
  658. * The ``cleanup`` management command will be removed. It's replaced by
  659. ``clearsessions``.
  660. * The ``daily_cleanup.py`` script will be removed.
  661. * The ``depth`` keyword argument will be removed from
  662. :meth:`~django.db.models.query.QuerySet.select_related`.
  663. * The undocumented ``get_warnings_state()``/``restore_warnings_state()``
  664. functions from :mod:`django.test.utils` and the ``save_warnings_state()``/
  665. ``restore_warnings_state()``
  666. :ref:`django.test.*TestCase <django-testcase-subclasses>` methods are
  667. deprecated. Use the :class:`warnings.catch_warnings` context manager
  668. available starting with Python 2.6 instead.
  669. * The undocumented ``check_for_test_cookie`` method in
  670. :class:`~django.contrib.auth.forms.AuthenticationForm` will be removed
  671. following an accelerated deprecation. Users subclassing this form should
  672. remove calls to this method, and instead ensure that their auth related views
  673. are CSRF protected, which ensures that cookies are enabled.
  674. * The version of ``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm()`` that
  675. supports base36 encoded user IDs
  676. (``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm_uidb36``) will be
  677. removed. If your site has been running Django 1.6 for more than
  678. ``PASSWORD_RESET_TIMEOUT_DAYS``, this change will have no effect. If not,
  679. then any password reset links generated before you upgrade to Django 1.7
  680. won't work after the upgrade.
  681. * The ``django.utils.encoding.StrAndUnicode`` mix-in will be removed.
  682. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.6:
  683. 1.6
  684. ---
  685. See the :ref:`Django 1.4 release notes<deprecated-features-1.4>` for more
  686. details on these changes.
  687. * ``django.contrib.databrowse`` will be removed.
  688. * ``django.contrib.localflavor`` will be removed following an accelerated
  689. deprecation.
  690. * ``django.contrib.markup`` will be removed following an accelerated
  691. deprecation.
  692. * The compatibility modules ``django.utils.copycompat`` and
  693. ``django.utils.hashcompat`` as well as the functions
  694. ``django.utils.itercompat.all`` and ``django.utils.itercompat.any`` will
  695. be removed. The Python builtin versions should be used instead.
  696. * The ``csrf_response_exempt`` and ``csrf_view_exempt`` decorators will
  697. be removed. Since 1.4 ``csrf_response_exempt`` has been a no-op (it
  698. returns the same function), and ``csrf_view_exempt`` has been a
  699. synonym for ``django.views.decorators.csrf.csrf_exempt``, which should
  700. be used to replace it.
  701. * The ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.CacheClass`` backend
  702. was split into two in Django 1.3 in order to introduce support for
  703. PyLibMC. The historical ``CacheClass`` will be removed in favor of
  704. ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.MemcachedCache``.
  705. * The UK-prefixed objects of ``django.contrib.localflavor.uk`` will only
  706. be accessible through their GB-prefixed names (GB is the correct
  707. ISO 3166 code for United Kingdom).
  708. * The ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS`` and ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` settings have been
  709. superseded by :setting:`IGNORABLE_404_URLS` in the 1.4 release. They will be
  710. removed.
  711. * The form wizard has been refactored to use class-based views with pluggable
  712. backends in 1.4. The previous implementation will be removed.
  713. * Legacy ways of calling
  714. :func:`~django.views.decorators.cache.cache_page` will be removed.
  715. * The backward-compatibility shim to automatically add a debug-false
  716. filter to the ``'mail_admins'`` logging handler will be removed. The
  717. :setting:`LOGGING` setting should include this filter explicitly if
  718. it is desired.
  719. * The builtin truncation functions ``django.utils.text.truncate_words()``
  720. and ``django.utils.text.truncate_html_words()`` will be removed in
  721. favor of the ``django.utils.text.Truncator`` class.
  722. * The ``django.contrib.gis.geoip.GeoIP`` class was moved to
  723. ``django.contrib.gis.geoip`` in 1.4 -- the shortcut in
  724. ``django.contrib.gis.utils`` will be removed.
  725. * ``django.conf.urls.defaults`` will be removed. The functions
  726. ``include()``, ``patterns()``, and ``url()``, plus
  727. :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler404` and :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler500`
  728. are now available through ``django.conf.urls``.
  729. * The functions ``setup_environ()`` and ``execute_manager()`` will be removed
  730. from :mod:`django.core.management`. This also means that the old (pre-1.4)
  731. style of :file:`manage.py` file will no longer work.
  732. * Setting the ``is_safe`` and ``needs_autoescape`` flags as attributes of
  733. template filter functions will no longer be supported.
  734. * The attribute ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` was renamed to ``HttpRequest.body``
  735. in 1.4. The backward compatibility will be removed --
  736. ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` will no longer work.
  737. * The value for the ``post_url_continue`` parameter in
  738. ``ModelAdmin.response_add()`` will have to be either ``None`` (to redirect
  739. to the newly created object's edit page) or a pre-formatted url. String
  740. formats, such as the previous default ``'../%s/'``, will not be accepted any
  741. more.
  742. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.5:
  743. 1.5
  744. ---
  745. See the :ref:`Django 1.3 release notes<deprecated-features-1.3>` for more
  746. details on these changes.
  747. * Starting Django without a :setting:`SECRET_KEY` will result in an exception
  748. rather than a ``DeprecationWarning``. (This is accelerated from the usual
  749. deprecation path; see the :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  750. * The ``mod_python`` request handler will be removed. The ``mod_wsgi``
  751. handler should be used instead.
  752. * The ``template`` attribute on ``django.test.client.Response``
  753. objects returned by the :ref:`test client <test-client>` will be removed.
  754. The :attr:`~django.test.Response.templates` attribute should be
  755. used instead.
  756. * The ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` will be removed.
  757. Instead use a ``unittest``-native class. The features of the
  758. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` (including fail-fast and
  759. Ctrl-C test termination) can be provided by :class:`unittest.TextTestRunner`.
  760. * The undocumented function
  761. ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.security_hash`` will be removed,
  762. instead use ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.form_hmac``
  763. * The function-based generic view modules will be removed in favor of their
  764. class-based equivalents, outlined :doc:`here
  765. </topics/class-based-views/index>`.
  766. * The ``django.core.servers.basehttp.AdminMediaHandler`` will be
  767. removed. In its place use
  768. ``django.contrib.staticfiles.handlers.StaticFilesHandler``.
  769. * The template tags library ``adminmedia`` and the template tag ``{%
  770. admin_media_prefix %}`` will be removed in favor of the generic static files
  771. handling. (This is faster than the usual deprecation path; see the
  772. :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  773. * The ``url`` and ``ssi`` template tags will be modified so that the first
  774. argument to each tag is a template variable, not an implied string. In 1.4,
  775. this behavior is provided by a version of the tag in the ``future`` template
  776. tag library.
  777. * The ``reset`` and ``sqlreset`` management commands will be removed.
  778. * Authentication backends will need to support an inactive user
  779. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions.
  780. The ``supports_inactive_user`` attribute will no longer be checked
  781. and can be removed from custom backends.
  782. * :meth:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSGeometry.transform` will raise
  783. a :class:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSException` when called
  784. on a geometry with no SRID value.
  785. * ``django.http.CompatCookie`` will be removed in favor of
  786. ``django.http.SimpleCookie``.
  787. * ``django.core.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  788. ``django.core.context_processors.PermLookupDict`` will be removed in
  789. favor of the corresponding
  790. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  791. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermLookupDict``, respectively.
  792. * The :setting:`MEDIA_URL` or :setting:`STATIC_URL` settings will be
  793. required to end with a trailing slash to ensure there is a consistent
  794. way to combine paths in templates.
  795. * ``django.db.models.fields.URLField.verify_exists`` will be removed. The
  796. feature was deprecated in 1.3.1 due to intractable security and
  797. performance issues and will follow a slightly accelerated deprecation
  798. timeframe.
  799. * Translations located under the so-called *project path* will be ignored during
  800. the translation building process performed at runtime. The
  801. :setting:`LOCALE_PATHS` setting can be used for the same task by including the
  802. filesystem path to a ``locale`` directory containing non-app-specific
  803. translations in its value.
  804. * The Markup contrib app will no longer support versions of Python-Markdown
  805. library earlier than 2.1. An accelerated timeline was used as this was
  806. a security related deprecation.
  807. * The ``CACHE_BACKEND`` setting will be removed. The cache backend(s) should be
  808. specified in the :setting:`CACHES` setting.
  809. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.4:
  810. 1.4
  811. ---
  812. See the :ref:`Django 1.2 release notes<deprecated-features-1.2>` for more
  813. details on these changes.
  814. * ``CsrfResponseMiddleware`` and ``CsrfMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  815. the ``{% csrf_token %}`` template tag inside forms to enable CSRF
  816. protection. ``CsrfViewMiddleware`` remains and is enabled by default.
  817. * The old imports for CSRF functionality (``django.contrib.csrf.*``),
  818. which moved to core in 1.2, will be removed.
  819. * The ``django.contrib.gis.db.backend`` module will be removed in favor
  820. of the specific backends.
  821. * ``SMTPConnection`` will be removed in favor of a generic email backend API.
  822. * The many to many SQL generation functions on the database backends
  823. will be removed.
  824. * The ability to use the ``DATABASE_*`` family of top-level settings to
  825. define database connections will be removed.
  826. * The ability to use shorthand notation to specify a database backend
  827. (i.e., ``sqlite3`` instead of ``django.db.backends.sqlite3``) will be
  828. removed.
  829. * The ``get_db_prep_save``, ``get_db_prep_value`` and
  830. ``get_db_prep_lookup`` methods will have to support multiple databases.
  831. * The ``Message`` model (in ``django.contrib.auth``), its related
  832. manager in the ``User`` model (``user.message_set``), and the
  833. associated methods (``user.message_set.create()`` and
  834. ``user.get_and_delete_messages()``), will be removed. The
  835. :doc:`messages framework </ref/contrib/messages>` should be used
  836. instead. The related ``messages`` variable returned by the
  837. auth context processor will also be removed. Note that this
  838. means that the admin application will depend on the messages
  839. context processor.
  840. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``obj`` parameter for
  841. permission checking. The ``supports_object_permissions`` attribute
  842. will no longer be checked and can be removed from custom backends.
  843. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``AnonymousUser`` class
  844. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions. The
  845. ``supports_anonymous_user`` variable will no longer be checked and can be
  846. removed from custom backends.
  847. * The ability to specify a callable template loader rather than a
  848. ``Loader`` class will be removed, as will the ``load_template_source``
  849. functions that are included with the built in template loaders for
  850. backwards compatibility.
  851. * ``django.utils.translation.get_date_formats()`` and
  852. ``django.utils.translation.get_partial_date_formats()``. These functions
  853. will be removed; use the locale-aware
  854. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate formats.
  855. * In ``django.forms.fields``, the constants: ``DEFAULT_DATE_INPUT_FORMATS``,
  856. ``DEFAULT_TIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` and
  857. ``DEFAULT_DATETIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` will be removed. Use
  858. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate
  859. formats.
  860. * The ability to use a function-based test runner will be removed,
  861. along with the ``django.test.simple.run_tests()`` test runner.
  862. * The ``views.feed()`` view and ``feeds.Feed`` class in
  863. ``django.contrib.syndication`` will be removed. The class-based view
  864. ``views.Feed`` should be used instead.
  865. * ``django.core.context_processors.auth``. This release will
  866. remove the old method in favor of the new method in
  867. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.auth``.
  868. * The ``postgresql`` database backend will be removed, use the
  869. ``postgresql_psycopg2`` backend instead.
  870. * The ``no`` language code will be removed and has been replaced by the
  871. ``nb`` language code.
  872. * Authentication backends will need to define the boolean attribute
  873. ``supports_inactive_user`` until version 1.5 when it will be assumed that
  874. all backends will handle inactive users.
  875. * ``django.db.models.fields.XMLField`` will be removed. This was
  876. deprecated as part of the 1.3 release. An accelerated deprecation
  877. schedule has been used because the field hasn't performed any role
  878. beyond that of a simple ``TextField`` since the removal of ``oldforms``.
  879. All uses of ``XMLField`` can be replaced with ``TextField``.
  880. * The undocumented ``mixin`` parameter to the ``open()`` method of
  881. ``django.core.files.storage.Storage`` (and subclasses) will be removed.
  882. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.3:
  883. 1.3
  884. ---
  885. See the :ref:`Django 1.1 release notes<deprecated-features-1.1>` for more
  886. details on these changes.
  887. * ``AdminSite.root()``. This method of hooking up the admin URLs will be
  888. removed in favor of including ``admin.site.urls``.
  889. * Authentication backends need to define the boolean attributes
  890. ``supports_object_permissions`` and ``supports_anonymous_user`` until
  891. version 1.4, at which point it will be assumed that all backends will
  892. support these options.
