  562. * The ``use_natural_keys`` argument for ``serializers.serialize()`` will be
  563. removed.
  564. * Private API ``django.forms.forms.get_declared_fields()`` will be removed.
  565. * The ability to use a ``SplitDateTimeWidget`` with ``DateTimeField`` will be
  566. removed.
  567. * The ``WSGIRequest.REQUEST`` property will be removed.
  568. * The class ``django.utils.datastructures.MergeDict`` will be removed.
  569. * The ``zh-cn`` and ``zh-tw`` language codes will be removed and have been
  570. replaced by the ``zh-hans`` and ``zh-hant`` language code respectively.
  571. * The internal ``django.utils.functional.memoize`` will be removed.
  572. * ``django.core.cache.get_cache`` will be removed. Add suitable entries
  573. to :setting:`CACHES` and use :data:`django.core.cache.caches` instead.
  574. * ``django.db.models.loading`` will be removed.
  575. * Passing callable arguments to querysets will no longer be possible.
  576. * ``BaseCommand.requires_model_validation`` will be removed in favor of
  577. ``requires_system_checks``. Admin validators will be replaced by admin
  578. checks.
  579. * The ``ModelAdmin.validator_class`` and ``default_validator_class`` attributes
  580. will be removed.
  581. * ``ModelAdmin.validate()`` will be removed.
  582. * ``django.db.backends.DatabaseValidation.validate_field`` will be removed in
  583. favor of the ``check_field`` method.
  584. * The ``validate`` management command will be removed.
  585. * ``django.utils.module_loading.import_by_path`` will be removed in favor of
  586. ``django.utils.module_loading.import_string``.
  587. * ``ssi`` and ``url`` template tags will be removed from the ``future`` template
  588. tag library (used during the 1.3/1.4 deprecation period).
  589. * ``django.utils.text.javascript_quote`` will be removed.
  590. * Database test settings as independent entries in the database settings,
  591. prefixed by ``TEST_``, will no longer be supported.
  592. * The ``cache_choices`` option to :class:`~django.forms.ModelChoiceField` and
  593. :class:`~django.forms.ModelMultipleChoiceField` will be removed.
  594. * The default value of the
  595. :attr:`RedirectView.permanent <django.views.generic.base.RedirectView.permanent>`
  596. attribute will change from ``True`` to ``False``.
  597. * ``django.contrib.sitemaps.FlatPageSitemap`` will be removed in favor of
  598. ``django.contrib.flatpages.sitemaps.FlatPageSitemap``.
  599. * Private API ``django.test.utils.TestTemplateLoader`` will be removed.
  600. * The ``django.contrib.contenttypes.generic`` module will be removed.
  601. * Private APIs ``django.db.models.sql.where.WhereNode.make_atom()`` and
  602. ``django.db.models.sql.where.Constraint`` will be removed.
  603. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.8:
  604. 1.8
  605. ---
  606. See the :ref:`Django 1.6 release notes<deprecated-features-1.6>` for more
  607. details on these changes.
  608. * ``django.contrib.comments`` will be removed.
  609. * The following transaction management APIs will be removed:
  610. - ``TransactionMiddleware``,
  611. - the decorators and context managers ``autocommit``, ``commit_on_success``,
  612. and ``commit_manually``, defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  613. - the functions ``commit_unless_managed`` and ``rollback_unless_managed``,
  614. also defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  615. - the ``TRANSACTIONS_MANAGED`` setting.
  616. * The :ttag:`cycle` and :ttag:`firstof` template tags will auto-escape their
  617. arguments. In 1.6 and 1.7, this behavior is provided by the version of these
  618. tags in the ``future`` template tag library.
  619. * The ``SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS`` setting will be removed. Add the
  620. :class:`django.middleware.common.BrokenLinkEmailsMiddleware` middleware to
  621. your ``MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES`` setting instead.
  622. * ``django.middleware.doc.XViewMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  623. ``django.contrib.admindocs.middleware.XViewMiddleware`` instead.
  624. * ``Model._meta.module_name`` was renamed to ``model_name``.
  625. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename ``get_query_set``
  626. and similar queryset methods. This affects the following classes:
  627. ``BaseModelAdmin``, ``ChangeList``, ``BaseCommentNode``,
  628. ``GenericForeignKey``, ``Manager``, ``SingleRelatedObjectDescriptor`` and
  629. ``ReverseSingleRelatedObjectDescriptor``.
  630. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename the attributes
  631. ``ChangeList.root_query_set`` and ``ChangeList.query_set``.
  632. * ``django.views.defaults.shortcut`` will be removed, as part of the
  633. goal of removing all ``django.contrib`` references from the core
  634. Django codebase. Instead use
  635. ``django.contrib.contenttypes.views.shortcut``. ``django.conf.urls.shortcut``
  636. will also be removed.
  637. * Support for the Python Imaging Library (PIL) module will be removed, as it
  638. no longer appears to be actively maintained & does not work on Python 3.
  639. * The following private APIs will be removed:
  640. - ``django.db.backend``
  641. - ``django.db.close_connection()``
  642. - ``django.db.backends.creation.BaseDatabaseCreation.set_autocommit()``
  643. - ``django.db.transaction.is_managed()``
  644. - ``django.db.transaction.managed()``
  645. * ``django.forms.widgets.RadioInput`` will be removed in favor of
  646. ``django.forms.widgets.RadioChoiceInput``.
  647. * The module ``django.test.simple`` and the class
  648. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestSuiteRunner`` will be removed. Instead use
  649. ``django.test.runner.DiscoverRunner``.
  650. * The module ``django.test._doctest`` will be removed. Instead use the doctest
  651. module from the Python standard library.
  652. * The ``CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_ANONYMOUS_ONLY`` setting will be removed.
  653. * Usage of the hard-coded *Hold down "Control", or "Command" on a Mac, to select
  654. more than one.* string to override or append to user-provided ``help_text`` in
  655. forms for ManyToMany model fields will not be performed by Django anymore
  656. either at the model or forms layer.
  657. * The ``Model._meta.get_(add|change|delete)_permission`` methods will
  658. be removed.
  659. * The session key ``django_language`` will no longer be read for backwards
  660. compatibility.
  661. * Geographic Sitemaps will be removed
  662. (``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.index`` and
  663. ``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.sitemap``).
  664. * ``django.utils.html.fix_ampersands``, the ``fix_ampersands`` template filter and
  665. ``django.utils.html.clean_html`` will be removed following an accelerated deprecation.
  666. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.7:
  667. 1.7
  668. ---
  669. See the :ref:`Django 1.5 release notes<deprecated-features-1.5>` for more
  670. details on these changes.
  671. * The module ``django.utils.simplejson`` will be removed. The standard library
  672. provides :mod:`json` which should be used instead.
  673. * The function ``django.utils.itercompat.product`` will be removed. The Python
  674. builtin version should be used instead.
  675. * Auto-correction of INSTALLED_APPS and TEMPLATE_DIRS settings when they are
  676. specified as a plain string instead of a tuple will be removed and raise an
  677. exception.
  678. * The ``mimetype`` argument to the ``__init__`` methods of
  679. :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse`,
  680. :class:`~django.template.response.SimpleTemplateResponse`, and
  681. :class:`~django.template.response.TemplateResponse`, will be removed.
  682. ``content_type`` should be used instead. This also applies to the
  683. ``render_to_response()`` shortcut and the sitemap views,
  684. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.index` and
  685. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.sitemap`.
  686. * When :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse` is instantiated with an iterator,
  687. or when :attr:`~django.http.HttpResponse.content` is set to an iterator,
  688. that iterator will be immediately consumed.
  689. * The ``AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE`` setting, and the ``get_profile()`` method on
  690. the User model, will be removed.
  691. * The ``cleanup`` management command will be removed. It's replaced by
  692. ``clearsessions``.
  693. * The ``daily_cleanup.py`` script will be removed.
  694. * The ``depth`` keyword argument will be removed from
  695. :meth:`~django.db.models.query.QuerySet.select_related`.
  696. * The undocumented ``get_warnings_state()``/``restore_warnings_state()``
  697. functions from :mod:`django.test.utils` and the ``save_warnings_state()``/
  698. ``restore_warnings_state()``
  699. :ref:`django.test.*TestCase <django-testcase-subclasses>` methods are
  700. deprecated. Use the :class:`warnings.catch_warnings` context manager
  701. available starting with Python 2.6 instead.
  702. * The undocumented ``check_for_test_cookie`` method in
  703. :class:`~django.contrib.auth.forms.AuthenticationForm` will be removed
  704. following an accelerated deprecation. Users subclassing this form should
  705. remove calls to this method, and instead ensure that their auth related views
  706. are CSRF protected, which ensures that cookies are enabled.
  707. * The version of ``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm()`` that
  708. supports base36 encoded user IDs
  709. (``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm_uidb36``) will be
  710. removed. If your site has been running Django 1.6 for more than
  711. ``PASSWORD_RESET_TIMEOUT_DAYS``, this change will have no effect. If not,
  712. then any password reset links generated before you upgrade to Django 1.7
  713. won't work after the upgrade.
  714. * The ``django.utils.encoding.StrAndUnicode`` mix-in will be removed.

  718. See the :ref:`Django 1.4 release notes<deprecated-features-1.4>` for more
  719. details on these changes.
  720. * ``django.contrib.databrowse`` will be removed.
  721. * ``django.contrib.localflavor`` will be removed following an accelerated
  722. deprecation.
  723. * ``django.contrib.markup`` will be removed following an accelerated
  724. deprecation.
  725. * The compatibility modules ``django.utils.copycompat`` and
  726. ``django.utils.hashcompat`` as well as the functions
  727. ``django.utils.itercompat.all`` and ``django.utils.itercompat.any`` will
  728. be removed. The Python builtin versions should be used instead.
  729. * The ``csrf_response_exempt`` and ``csrf_view_exempt`` decorators will
  730. be removed. Since 1.4 ``csrf_response_exempt`` has been a no-op (it
  731. returns the same function), and ``csrf_view_exempt`` has been a
  732. synonym for ``django.views.decorators.csrf.csrf_exempt``, which should
  733. be used to replace it.
  734. * The ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.CacheClass`` backend
  735. was split into two in Django 1.3 in order to introduce support for
  736. PyLibMC. The historical ``CacheClass`` will be removed in favor of
  737. ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.MemcachedCache``.
  738. * The UK-prefixed objects of ``django.contrib.localflavor.uk`` will only
  739. be accessible through their GB-prefixed names (GB is the correct
  740. ISO 3166 code for United Kingdom).
  741. * The ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS`` and ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` settings have been
  742. superseded by :setting:`IGNORABLE_404_URLS` in the 1.4 release. They will be
  743. removed.
  744. * The form wizard has been refactored to use class-based views with pluggable
  745. backends in 1.4. The previous implementation will be removed.
  746. * Legacy ways of calling
  747. :func:`~django.views.decorators.cache.cache_page` will be removed.
  748. * The backward-compatibility shim to automatically add a debug-false
  749. filter to the ``'mail_admins'`` logging handler will be removed. The
  750. :setting:`LOGGING` setting should include this filter explicitly if
  751. it is desired.
  752. * The builtin truncation functions ``django.utils.text.truncate_words()``
  753. and ``django.utils.text.truncate_html_words()`` will be removed in
  754. favor of the ``django.utils.text.Truncator`` class.
  755. * The ``django.contrib.gis.geoip.GeoIP`` class was moved to
  756. ``django.contrib.gis.geoip`` in 1.4 -- the shortcut in
  757. ``django.contrib.gis.utils`` will be removed.
  758. * ``django.conf.urls.defaults`` will be removed. The functions
  759. ``include()``, ``patterns()``, and ``url()``, plus
  760. :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler404` and :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler500`
  761. are now available through ``django.conf.urls``.
  762. * The functions ``setup_environ()`` and ``execute_manager()`` will be removed
  763. from :mod:`django.core.management`. This also means that the old (pre-1.4)
  764. style of :file:`manage.py` file will no longer work.
  765. * Setting the ``is_safe`` and ``needs_autoescape`` flags as attributes of
  766. template filter functions will no longer be supported.
  767. * The attribute ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` was renamed to ``HttpRequest.body``
  768. in 1.4. The backward compatibility will be removed --
  769. ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` will no longer work.
  770. * The value for the ``post_url_continue`` parameter in
  771. ``ModelAdmin.response_add()`` will have to be either ``None`` (to redirect
  772. to the newly created object's edit page) or a pre-formatted url. String
  773. formats, such as the previous default ``'../%s/'``, will not be accepted any
  774. more.

  777. ---
  778. See the :ref:`Django 1.3 release notes<deprecated-features-1.3>` for more
  779. details on these changes.
  780. * Starting Django without a :setting:`SECRET_KEY` will result in an exception
  781. rather than a ``DeprecationWarning``. (This is accelerated from the usual
  782. deprecation path; see the :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  783. * The ``mod_python`` request handler will be removed. The ``mod_wsgi``
  784. handler should be used instead.
  785. * The ``template`` attribute on ``django.test.client.Response``
  786. objects returned by the :ref:`test client <test-client>` will be removed.
  787. The :attr:`~django.test.Response.templates` attribute should be
  788. used instead.
  789. * The ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` will be removed.
  790. Instead use a ``unittest``-native class. The features of the
  791. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` (including fail-fast and
  792. Ctrl-C test termination) can be provided by :class:`unittest.TextTestRunner`.
  793. * The undocumented function
  794. ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.security_hash`` will be removed,
  795. instead use ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.form_hmac``
  796. * The function-based generic view modules will be removed in favor of their
  797. class-based equivalents, outlined :doc:`here
  798. </topics/class-based-views/index>`.
  799. * The ``django.core.servers.basehttp.AdminMediaHandler`` will be
  800. removed. In its place use
  801. ``django.contrib.staticfiles.handlers.StaticFilesHandler``.
  802. * The template tags library ``adminmedia`` and the template tag ``{%
  803. admin_media_prefix %}`` will be removed in favor of the generic static files
  804. handling. (This is faster than the usual deprecation path; see the
  805. :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  806. * The ``url`` and ``ssi`` template tags will be modified so that the first
  807. argument to each tag is a template variable, not an implied string. In 1.4,
  808. this behavior is provided by a version of the tag in the ``future`` template
  809. tag library.
  810. * The ``reset`` and ``sqlreset`` management commands will be removed.
  811. * Authentication backends will need to support an inactive user
  812. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions.
  813. The ``supports_inactive_user`` attribute will no longer be checked
  814. and can be removed from custom backends.
  815. * :meth:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSGeometry.transform` will raise
  816. a :class:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSException` when called
  817. on a geometry with no SRID value.
  818. * ``django.http.CompatCookie`` will be removed in favor of
  819. ``django.http.SimpleCookie``.
  820. * ``django.core.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  821. ``django.core.context_processors.PermLookupDict`` will be removed in
  822. favor of the corresponding
  823. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  824. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermLookupDict``, respectively.
  825. * The :setting:`MEDIA_URL` or :setting:`STATIC_URL` settings will be
  826. required to end with a trailing slash to ensure there is a consistent
  827. way to combine paths in templates.
  828. * ``django.db.models.fields.URLField.verify_exists`` will be removed. The
  829. feature was deprecated in 1.3.1 due to intractable security and
  830. performance issues and will follow a slightly accelerated deprecation
  831. timeframe.
  832. * Translations located under the so-called *project path* will be ignored during
  833. the translation building process performed at runtime. The
  834. :setting:`LOCALE_PATHS` setting can be used for the same task by including the
  835. filesystem path to a ``locale`` directory containing non-app-specific
  836. translations in its value.
  837. * The Markup contrib app will no longer support versions of Python-Markdown
  838. library earlier than 2.1. An accelerated timeline was used as this was
  839. a security related deprecation.
  840. * The ``CACHE_BACKEND`` setting will be removed. The cache backend(s) should be
  841. specified in the :setting:`CACHES` setting.
  842. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.4:
  843. 1.4
  844. ---
  845. See the :ref:`Django 1.2 release notes<deprecated-features-1.2>` for more
  846. details on these changes.
  847. * ``CsrfResponseMiddleware`` and ``CsrfMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  848. the ``{% csrf_token %}`` template tag inside forms to enable CSRF
  849. protection. ``CsrfViewMiddleware`` remains and is enabled by default.
  850. * The old imports for CSRF functionality (``django.contrib.csrf.*``),
  851. which moved to core in 1.2, will be removed.
  852. * The ``django.contrib.gis.db.backend`` module will be removed in favor
  853. of the specific backends.
  854. * ``SMTPConnection`` will be removed in favor of a generic email backend API.
  855. * The many to many SQL generation functions on the database backends
  856. will be removed.
  857. * The ability to use the ``DATABASE_*`` family of top-level settings to
  858. define database connections will be removed.
  859. * The ability to use shorthand notation to specify a database backend
  860. (i.e., ``sqlite3`` instead of ``django.db.backends.sqlite3``) will be
  861. removed.
  862. * The ``get_db_prep_save``, ``get_db_prep_value`` and
  863. ``get_db_prep_lookup`` methods will have to support multiple databases.
  864. * The ``Message`` model (in ``django.contrib.auth``), its related
  865. manager in the ``User`` model (``user.message_set``), and the
  866. associated methods (``user.message_set.create()`` and
  867. ``user.get_and_delete_messages()``), will be removed. The
  868. :doc:`messages framework </ref/contrib/messages>` should be used
  869. instead. The related ``messages`` variable returned by the
  870. auth context processor will also be removed. Note that this
  871. means that the admin application will depend on the messages
  872. context processor.
  873. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``obj`` parameter for
  874. permission checking. The ``supports_object_permissions`` attribute
  875. will no longer be checked and can be removed from custom backends.
  876. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``AnonymousUser`` class
  877. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions. The
  878. ``supports_anonymous_user`` variable will no longer be checked and can be
  879. removed from custom backends.
  880. * The ability to specify a callable template loader rather than a
  881. ``Loader`` class will be removed, as will the ``load_template_source``
  882. functions that are included with the built in template loaders for
  883. backwards compatibility.
  884. * ``django.utils.translation.get_date_formats()`` and
  885. ``django.utils.translation.get_partial_date_formats()``. These functions
  886. will be removed; use the locale-aware
  887. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate formats.
  888. * In ``django.forms.fields``, the constants: ``DEFAULT_DATE_INPUT_FORMATS``,
  889. ``DEFAULT_TIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` and
  890. ``DEFAULT_DATETIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` will be removed. Use
  891. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate
  892. formats.
  893. * The ability to use a function-based test runner will be removed,
  894. along with the ``django.test.simple.run_tests()`` test runner.
  895. * The ``views.feed()`` view and ``feeds.Feed`` class in
  896. ``django.contrib.syndication`` will be removed. The class-based view
  897. ``views.Feed`` should be used instead.
  898. * ``django.core.context_processors.auth``. This release will
  899. remove the old method in favor of the new method in
  900. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.auth``.
  901. * The ``postgresql`` database backend will be removed, use the
  902. ``postgresql_psycopg2`` backend instead.
  903. * The ``no`` language code will be removed and has been replaced by the
  904. ``nb`` language code.
  905. * Authentication backends will need to define the boolean attribute
  906. ``supports_inactive_user`` until version 1.5 when it will be assumed that
  907. all backends will handle inactive users.
  908. * ``django.db.models.fields.XMLField`` will be removed. This was
  909. deprecated as part of the 1.3 release. An accelerated deprecation
  910. schedule has been used because the field hasn't performed any role
  911. beyond that of a simple ``TextField`` since the removal of ``oldforms``.
  912. All uses of ``XMLField`` can be replaced with ``TextField``.
  913. * The undocumented ``mixin`` parameter to the ``open()`` method of
  914. ``django.core.files.storage.Storage`` (and subclasses) will be removed.

  916. 1.3

  918. See the :ref:`Django 1.1 release notes<deprecated-features-1.1>` for more
  919. details on these changes.
  920. * ``AdminSite.root()``. This method of hooking up the admin URLs will be
  921. removed in favor of including ``admin.site.urls``.
  922. * Authentication backends need to define the boolean attributes
  923. ``supports_object_permissions`` and ``supports_anonymous_user`` until
  924. version 1.4, at which point it will be assumed that all backends will
  925. support these options.
