  570. - the decorators and context managers ``autocommit``, ``commit_on_success``,
  571. and ``commit_manually``, defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  572. - the functions ``commit_unless_managed`` and ``rollback_unless_managed``,
  573. also defined in ``django.db.transaction``,
  574. - the ``TRANSACTIONS_MANAGED`` setting.
  575. * The :ttag:`cycle` and :ttag:`firstof` template tags will auto-escape their
  576. arguments. In 1.6 and 1.7, this behavior is provided by the version of these
  577. tags in the ``future`` template tag library.
  578. * The ``SEND_BROKEN_LINK_EMAILS`` setting will be removed. Add the
  579. :class:`django.middleware.common.BrokenLinkEmailsMiddleware` middleware to
  580. your ``MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES`` setting instead.
  581. * ``django.middleware.doc.XViewMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  582. ``django.contrib.admindocs.middleware.XViewMiddleware`` instead.
  583. * ``Model._meta.module_name`` was renamed to ``model_name``.
  584. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename ``get_query_set``
  585. and similar queryset methods. This affects the following classes:
  586. ``BaseModelAdmin``, ``ChangeList``, ``BaseCommentNode``,
  587. ``GenericForeignKey``, ``Manager``, ``SingleRelatedObjectDescriptor`` and
  588. ``ReverseSingleRelatedObjectDescriptor``.
  589. * Remove the backward compatible shims introduced to rename the attributes
  590. ``ChangeList.root_query_set`` and ``ChangeList.query_set``.
  591. * ``django.views.defaults.shortcut`` will be removed, as part of the
  592. goal of removing all ``django.contrib`` references from the core
  593. Django codebase. Instead use
  594. ``django.contrib.contenttypes.views.shortcut``. ``django.conf.urls.shortcut``
  595. will also be removed.
  596. * Support for the Python Imaging Library (PIL) module will be removed, as it
  597. no longer appears to be actively maintained & does not work on Python 3.
  598. * The following private APIs will be removed:
  599. - ``django.db.backend``
  600. - ``django.db.close_connection()``
  601. - ``django.db.backends.creation.BaseDatabaseCreation.set_autocommit()``
  602. - ``django.db.transaction.is_managed()``
  603. - ``django.db.transaction.managed()``
  604. * ``django.forms.widgets.RadioInput`` will be removed in favor of
  605. ``django.forms.widgets.RadioChoiceInput``.
  606. * The module ``django.test.simple`` and the class
  607. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestSuiteRunner`` will be removed. Instead use
  608. ``django.test.runner.DiscoverRunner``.
  609. * The module ``django.test._doctest`` will be removed. Instead use the doctest
  610. module from the Python standard library.
  611. * The ``CACHE_MIDDLEWARE_ANONYMOUS_ONLY`` setting will be removed.
  612. * Usage of the hard-coded *Hold down "Control", or "Command" on a Mac, to select
  613. more than one.* string to override or append to user-provided ``help_text`` in
  614. forms for ManyToMany model fields will not be performed by Django anymore
  615. either at the model or forms layer.
  616. * The ``Model._meta.get_(add|change|delete)_permission`` methods will
  617. be removed.
  618. * The session key ``django_language`` will no longer be read for backwards
  619. compatibility.
  620. * Geographic Sitemaps will be removed
  621. (``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.index`` and
  622. ``django.contrib.gis.sitemaps.views.sitemap``).
  623. * ``django.utils.html.fix_ampersands``, the ``fix_ampersands`` template filter and
  624. ``django.utils.html.clean_html`` will be removed following an accelerated deprecation.
  625. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.7:
  626. 1.7
  627. ---
  628. See the :ref:`Django 1.5 release notes<deprecated-features-1.5>` for more
  629. details on these changes.
  630. * The module ``django.utils.simplejson`` will be removed. The standard library
  631. provides :mod:`json` which should be used instead.
  632. * The function ``django.utils.itercompat.product`` will be removed. The Python
  633. builtin version should be used instead.
  634. * Auto-correction of INSTALLED_APPS and TEMPLATE_DIRS settings when they are
  635. specified as a plain string instead of a tuple will be removed and raise an
  636. exception.
  637. * The ``mimetype`` argument to the ``__init__`` methods of
  638. :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse`,
  639. :class:`~django.template.response.SimpleTemplateResponse`, and
  640. :class:`~django.template.response.TemplateResponse`, will be removed.
  641. ``content_type`` should be used instead. This also applies to the
  642. ``render_to_response()`` shortcut and the sitemap views,
  643. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.index` and
  644. :func:`~django.contrib.sitemaps.views.sitemap`.
  645. * When :class:`~django.http.HttpResponse` is instantiated with an iterator,
  646. or when :attr:`~django.http.HttpResponse.content` is set to an iterator,
  647. that iterator will be immediately consumed.
  648. * The ``AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE`` setting, and the ``get_profile()`` method on
  649. the User model, will be removed.
  650. * The ``cleanup`` management command will be removed. It's replaced by
  651. ``clearsessions``.
  652. * The ``daily_cleanup.py`` script will be removed.
  653. * The ``depth`` keyword argument will be removed from
  654. :meth:`~django.db.models.query.QuerySet.select_related`.
  655. * The undocumented ``get_warnings_state()``/``restore_warnings_state()``
  656. functions from :mod:`django.test.utils` and the ``save_warnings_state()``/
  657. ``restore_warnings_state()``
  658. :ref:`django.test.*TestCase <django-testcase-subclasses>` methods are
  659. deprecated. Use the :class:`warnings.catch_warnings` context manager
  660. available starting with Python 2.6 instead.
  661. * The undocumented ``check_for_test_cookie`` method in
  662. :class:`~django.contrib.auth.forms.AuthenticationForm` will be removed
  663. following an accelerated deprecation. Users subclassing this form should
  664. remove calls to this method, and instead ensure that their auth related views
  665. are CSRF protected, which ensures that cookies are enabled.
  666. * The version of ``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm()`` that
  667. supports base36 encoded user IDs
  668. (``django.contrib.auth.views.password_reset_confirm_uidb36``) will be
  669. removed. If your site has been running Django 1.6 for more than
  670. ``PASSWORD_RESET_TIMEOUT_DAYS``, this change will have no effect. If not,
  671. then any password reset links generated before you upgrade to Django 1.7
  672. won't work after the upgrade.
  673. * The ``django.utils.encoding.StrAndUnicode`` mix-in will be removed.
  674. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.6:
  675. 1.6
  676. ---
  677. See the :ref:`Django 1.4 release notes<deprecated-features-1.4>` for more
  678. details on these changes.
  679. * ``django.contrib.databrowse`` will be removed.
  680. * ``django.contrib.localflavor`` will be removed following an accelerated
  681. deprecation.
  682. * ``django.contrib.markup`` will be removed following an accelerated
  683. deprecation.
  684. * The compatibility modules ``django.utils.copycompat`` and
  685. ``django.utils.hashcompat`` as well as the functions
  686. ``django.utils.itercompat.all`` and ``django.utils.itercompat.any`` will
  687. be removed. The Python builtin versions should be used instead.
  688. * The ``csrf_response_exempt`` and ``csrf_view_exempt`` decorators will
  689. be removed. Since 1.4 ``csrf_response_exempt`` has been a no-op (it
  690. returns the same function), and ``csrf_view_exempt`` has been a
  691. synonym for ``django.views.decorators.csrf.csrf_exempt``, which should
  692. be used to replace it.
  693. * The ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.CacheClass`` backend
  694. was split into two in Django 1.3 in order to introduce support for
  695. PyLibMC. The historical ``CacheClass`` will be removed in favor of
  696. ``django.core.cache.backends.memcached.MemcachedCache``.
  697. * The UK-prefixed objects of ``django.contrib.localflavor.uk`` will only
  698. be accessible through their GB-prefixed names (GB is the correct
  699. ISO 3166 code for United Kingdom).
  700. * The ``IGNORABLE_404_STARTS`` and ``IGNORABLE_404_ENDS`` settings have been
  701. superseded by :setting:`IGNORABLE_404_URLS` in the 1.4 release. They will be
  702. removed.
  703. * The form wizard has been refactored to use class-based views with pluggable
  704. backends in 1.4. The previous implementation will be removed.
  705. * Legacy ways of calling
  706. :func:`~django.views.decorators.cache.cache_page` will be removed.
  707. * The backward-compatibility shim to automatically add a debug-false
  708. filter to the ``'mail_admins'`` logging handler will be removed. The
  709. :setting:`LOGGING` setting should include this filter explicitly if
  710. it is desired.
  711. * The builtin truncation functions ``django.utils.text.truncate_words()``
  712. and ``django.utils.text.truncate_html_words()`` will be removed in
  713. favor of the ``django.utils.text.Truncator`` class.
  714. * The ``django.contrib.gis.geoip.GeoIP`` class was moved to
  715. ``django.contrib.gis.geoip`` in 1.4 -- the shortcut in
  716. ``django.contrib.gis.utils`` will be removed.
  717. * ``django.conf.urls.defaults`` will be removed. The functions
  718. ``include()``, ``patterns()``, and ``url()``, plus
  719. :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler404` and :data:`~django.conf.urls.handler500`
  720. are now available through ``django.conf.urls``.
  721. * The functions ``setup_environ()`` and ``execute_manager()`` will be removed
  722. from :mod:`django.core.management`. This also means that the old (pre-1.4)
  723. style of :file:`manage.py` file will no longer work.
  724. * Setting the ``is_safe`` and ``needs_autoescape`` flags as attributes of
  725. template filter functions will no longer be supported.
  726. * The attribute ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` was renamed to ``HttpRequest.body``
  727. in 1.4. The backward compatibility will be removed --
  728. ``HttpRequest.raw_post_data`` will no longer work.
  729. * The value for the ``post_url_continue`` parameter in
  730. ``ModelAdmin.response_add()`` will have to be either ``None`` (to redirect
  731. to the newly created object's edit page) or a pre-formatted url. String
  732. formats, such as the previous default ``'../%s/'``, will not be accepted any
  733. more.
  734. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.5:
  735. 1.5
  736. ---
  737. See the :ref:`Django 1.3 release notes<deprecated-features-1.3>` for more
  738. details on these changes.
  739. * Starting Django without a :setting:`SECRET_KEY` will result in an exception
  740. rather than a ``DeprecationWarning``. (This is accelerated from the usual
  741. deprecation path; see the :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  742. * The ``mod_python`` request handler will be removed. The ``mod_wsgi``
  743. handler should be used instead.
  744. * The ``template`` attribute on ``django.test.client.Response``
  745. objects returned by the :ref:`test client <test-client>` will be removed.
  746. The :attr:`~django.test.Response.templates` attribute should be
  747. used instead.
  748. * The ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` will be removed.
  749. Instead use a ``unittest``-native class. The features of the
  750. ``django.test.simple.DjangoTestRunner`` (including fail-fast and
  751. Ctrl-C test termination) can be provided by :class:`unittest.TextTestRunner`.
  752. * The undocumented function
  753. ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.security_hash`` will be removed,
  754. instead use ``django.contrib.formtools.utils.form_hmac``
  755. * The function-based generic view modules will be removed in favor of their
  756. class-based equivalents, outlined :doc:`here
  757. </topics/class-based-views/index>`.
  758. * The ``django.core.servers.basehttp.AdminMediaHandler`` will be
  759. removed. In its place use
  760. ``django.contrib.staticfiles.handlers.StaticFilesHandler``.
  761. * The template tags library ``adminmedia`` and the template tag ``{%
  762. admin_media_prefix %}`` will be removed in favor of the generic static files
  763. handling. (This is faster than the usual deprecation path; see the
  764. :doc:`Django 1.4 release notes</releases/1.4>`.)
  765. * The ``url`` and ``ssi`` template tags will be modified so that the first
  766. argument to each tag is a template variable, not an implied string. In 1.4,
  767. this behavior is provided by a version of the tag in the ``future`` template
  768. tag library.
  769. * The ``reset`` and ``sqlreset`` management commands will be removed.
  770. * Authentication backends will need to support an inactive user
  771. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions.
  772. The ``supports_inactive_user`` attribute will no longer be checked
  773. and can be removed from custom backends.
  774. * :meth:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSGeometry.transform` will raise
  775. a :class:`~django.contrib.gis.geos.GEOSException` when called
  776. on a geometry with no SRID value.
  777. * ``django.http.CompatCookie`` will be removed in favor of
  778. ``django.http.SimpleCookie``.
  779. * ``django.core.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  780. ``django.core.context_processors.PermLookupDict`` will be removed in
  781. favor of the corresponding
  782. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermWrapper`` and
  783. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.PermLookupDict``, respectively.
  784. * The :setting:`MEDIA_URL` or :setting:`STATIC_URL` settings will be
  785. required to end with a trailing slash to ensure there is a consistent
  786. way to combine paths in templates.
  787. * ``django.db.models.fields.URLField.verify_exists`` will be removed. The
  788. feature was deprecated in 1.3.1 due to intractable security and
  789. performance issues and will follow a slightly accelerated deprecation
  790. timeframe.
  791. * Translations located under the so-called *project path* will be ignored during
  792. the translation building process performed at runtime. The
  793. :setting:`LOCALE_PATHS` setting can be used for the same task by including the
  794. filesystem path to a ``locale`` directory containing non-app-specific
  795. translations in its value.
  796. * The Markup contrib app will no longer support versions of Python-Markdown
  797. library earlier than 2.1. An accelerated timeline was used as this was
  798. a security related deprecation.
  799. * The ``CACHE_BACKEND`` setting will be removed. The cache backend(s) should be
  800. specified in the :setting:`CACHES` setting.
  801. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.4:
  802. 1.4
  803. ---
  804. See the :ref:`Django 1.2 release notes<deprecated-features-1.2>` for more
  805. details on these changes.
  806. * ``CsrfResponseMiddleware`` and ``CsrfMiddleware`` will be removed. Use
  807. the ``{% csrf_token %}`` template tag inside forms to enable CSRF
  808. protection. ``CsrfViewMiddleware`` remains and is enabled by default.
  809. * The old imports for CSRF functionality (``django.contrib.csrf.*``),
  810. which moved to core in 1.2, will be removed.
  811. * The ``django.contrib.gis.db.backend`` module will be removed in favor
  812. of the specific backends.
  813. * ``SMTPConnection`` will be removed in favor of a generic email backend API.
  814. * The many to many SQL generation functions on the database backends
  815. will be removed.
  816. * The ability to use the ``DATABASE_*`` family of top-level settings to
  817. define database connections will be removed.
  818. * The ability to use shorthand notation to specify a database backend
  819. (i.e., ``sqlite3`` instead of ``django.db.backends.sqlite3``) will be
  820. removed.
  821. * The ``get_db_prep_save``, ``get_db_prep_value`` and
  822. ``get_db_prep_lookup`` methods will have to support multiple databases.
  823. * The ``Message`` model (in ``django.contrib.auth``), its related
  824. manager in the ``User`` model (``user.message_set``), and the
  825. associated methods (``user.message_set.create()`` and
  826. ``user.get_and_delete_messages()``), will be removed. The
  827. :doc:`messages framework </ref/contrib/messages>` should be used
  828. instead. The related ``messages`` variable returned by the
  829. auth context processor will also be removed. Note that this
  830. means that the admin application will depend on the messages
  831. context processor.
  832. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``obj`` parameter for
  833. permission checking. The ``supports_object_permissions`` attribute
  834. will no longer be checked and can be removed from custom backends.
  835. * Authentication backends will need to support the ``AnonymousUser`` class
  836. being passed to all methods dealing with permissions. The
  837. ``supports_anonymous_user`` variable will no longer be checked and can be
  838. removed from custom backends.
  839. * The ability to specify a callable template loader rather than a
  840. ``Loader`` class will be removed, as will the ``load_template_source``
  841. functions that are included with the built in template loaders for
  842. backwards compatibility.
  843. * ``django.utils.translation.get_date_formats()`` and
  844. ``django.utils.translation.get_partial_date_formats()``. These functions
  845. will be removed; use the locale-aware
  846. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate formats.
  847. * In ``django.forms.fields``, the constants: ``DEFAULT_DATE_INPUT_FORMATS``,
  848. ``DEFAULT_TIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` and
  849. ``DEFAULT_DATETIME_INPUT_FORMATS`` will be removed. Use
  850. ``django.utils.formats.get_format()`` to get the appropriate
  851. formats.
  852. * The ability to use a function-based test runner will be removed,
  853. along with the ``django.test.simple.run_tests()`` test runner.
  854. * The ``views.feed()`` view and ``feeds.Feed`` class in
  855. ``django.contrib.syndication`` will be removed. The class-based view
  856. ``views.Feed`` should be used instead.
  857. * ``django.core.context_processors.auth``. This release will
  858. remove the old method in favor of the new method in
  859. ``django.contrib.auth.context_processors.auth``.
  860. * The ``postgresql`` database backend will be removed, use the
  861. ``postgresql_psycopg2`` backend instead.
  862. * The ``no`` language code will be removed and has been replaced by the
  863. ``nb`` language code.
  864. * Authentication backends will need to define the boolean attribute
  865. ``supports_inactive_user`` until version 1.5 when it will be assumed that
  866. all backends will handle inactive users.
  867. * ``django.db.models.fields.XMLField`` will be removed. This was
  868. deprecated as part of the 1.3 release. An accelerated deprecation
  869. schedule has been used because the field hasn't performed any role
  870. beyond that of a simple ``TextField`` since the removal of ``oldforms``.
  871. All uses of ``XMLField`` can be replaced with ``TextField``.
  872. * The undocumented ``mixin`` parameter to the ``open()`` method of
  873. ``django.core.files.storage.Storage`` (and subclasses) will be removed.
  874. .. _deprecation-removed-in-1.3:
  875. 1.3
  876. ---
  877. See the :ref:`Django 1.1 release notes<deprecated-features-1.1>` for more
  878. details on these changes.
  879. * ``AdminSite.root()``. This method of hooking up the admin URLs will be
  880. removed in favor of including ``admin.site.urls``.
  881. * Authentication backends need to define the boolean attributes
  882. ``supports_object_permissions`` and ``supports_anonymous_user`` until
  883. version 1.4, at which point it will be assumed that all backends will
  884. support these options.
